"Discoloration" on the bottoms of DVDs.
I notice that every once in awhile I get a DVD that that has a sort of discoloration on the bottom, expecially on the gold bottom discs. What I mean here is that some parts of the bottom of the disc are darker shaded than other parts of it, and the patterns seem to be perfectly random. Does anyone know why this happens? Is it anything to worry about? Reason I ask is that I just got "Taken" todau and the bottom is the 5th disc has this particularly bad, but none of the others are like this at all.

My copy of The Nightmare Before Christmas is like this. The bottom side of the disk is deep gold and there is a lighter swirl in the color. I played it recently and found that some of the extras no longer work. Either you wind up back in the calling menu or the image freezes.

Ok, thanks for the info. I have several DVD discs that are like that and they all seem to work, but none are near as bad as Taken. Guess i'll take Taken back to Best Buy since....better safe than sorry.

but does it play now? I have a few of these discs and have had for about 2 years. they play fine. this does not mean all is o.k. and also does not mean there is a problem.
when it comes to the manufacturing teams at these pressing plants...I'd always be worried. and forget about bitching to the store you buy things from. do you expect them to contact the plant and let them know a disc came back f'ckd?
sure....the store will replace the disc....but you need to bitch to the source of the problem, to make them aware. the problem with people today is that many are in denial that there could ever be a problem, and because they believe thier collection is safe from harm, so far, they refuse to investigate or participate in these issues. there are not many of us who seem to be building a film library that will last for years and years. many of us are sooo eager to get rid of dvd and move right to HD-DVD. we trade and sell the titles we have bought...keeping the # in the collection at a low total. the desire to keep these dvds seems to be dying.....and with it....the desire to make sure quality control has thier heads pulled out of thier ass. after all, if we are NOT going to keep these dvds....why should we care how long they last?
I will never subscribe to that damaging and just plain silly attitude.
