Beyond Re-Animator Specs?
#2
Checked it out last night: Brian Yuzna commentary; the second weirdest music video of the year (sorry, can't beat Crispin's "Ben"); making-of featurette; 1.85:1 anam; DD 5.1 and 2.0; trailer; motion-video menus; and as per usual: no insert (with track listing printed on back cover).
I purposefully didn't watch the stateside Sci-Fi airing, as I wanted to be fresh on this one. While it screened theatrically uncut in its native Spain, the domestic 95-minute DVD is labled with an R-rating. I've yet to see any specific cuts detailed, assuming there are some (lingering frames, prehaps), but I can say what I did see was gory as all get out (arching blood, penial/rodent fisticuffs, projectile guts, a squib riddled zombie, re-animated torso delivering a two-fist'd ass whuppin', on and on). I even giggled afterward when Yuzna said, in the behind-the-scenes reel, that Beyond was shot with less grue "due to the times." But I'll listen to the commentary today. Hopefully he'll elaborate on what, if anything, we're missing.
In the end, whatever the rating, I absolutely LOVED the flick and anticipate giving it a 4-star review without even the slightest hesitation.

"[Beyond Re-Animator] is not as violent and gruesome as the first movie, and I have to admit, I kind of would've liked to see the movie a bit more extreme in the gore department. But I was very aware while we were making it ... to keep in mind a little bit broader audience."

Yuzna doesn't reference any in his commentary. He did say ...

He's 10. I just skipped past the brief sex scene and the naked Meghan on the autopsy table scene.
The first zombie movie that we watched together was Lucio Fulci's Zombi 2.
Bride of Re-animator should be a bit more dicey since I've never actually gotten around to watching that one yet.......

Aside from some wild, wacked-out gore, it has some post-sex nudity, a bit of breast chewing, and

But then again, my dad beat me as a kid and I turned out pretty normal. That is, if you don't count me beating my kids.

Get a grip. Re-animator is just silly splatter effects with a couple of sexy spots that go away with a chapter skip.
Anyways, it's Christmas eve, so it's time to gather the family around to watch Straw Dogs:CC and IRREVERSIBLE.
J/K on that last part...........I always save the French films for New Years!
Merry Christmas!

Anyway, I was watching gory movies at that age. The only effect it had on me is that as an adult I spend a lot of my hard earned cash on horror dvds, back issues of Fangoria, Movie Maniacs, and other assorted horror stuff.

Hey I saw Las House on the Left,Silent Night Deadly night AND Re-animator to name but a few between ages 11-13 & I turned out alright
I do find it ironic that you would let him watch a gruesome splatterfest(sure it is darkly humorous, but still extreme) & yet a couple brief instances of sex/nudity are offensive & 'naughty' to view. Now that will really f%&* up someones mind if they start thinking violence is ok,but sex/nudity is wrong/evil/sinful/bad & then you will have another norman Bates on your hands.

Well I find it just wierd. If you are going to watch a film such as this with him. Let him view the entire film!
Since it is rather hypocriticial to say this is ok,but this tiny bit is not. Especiallly when considering the content of a film such as this!
Besides the zombies durring at least two sequences in the film(revival in morgue) & the finale feature nude zombies. So why should the other two bits of nudity be 'naughtier' & thus should cover your eyes? Sure those two portions are more sexual, but they are brief. In fact if I did not want my kid to see a certain sequence at that age based on material alone, that would be the 'head' sequence. Yet the other sex scenes is not bad at all or offensive.
Yet rather than be a 'this is ok,but this sequence is not!' person that contradicts themselves. I would just let them watch the film uncut if they choose to.
So if you think he can handle some extreme gore at that age, well let him view the entire film as intended. if he can't handle it. He will know & either shut his eyes himself, leave the room or want to turn it off.
I remember trying to watch Videodrome at such a young age not knowing the exact contents of the film, other than David "Scanners"(loved that film then & still do) Cronenberg directed it & it had something to do with tv controling/altering reality.
I turned it off after 30 minutes, since it was to shocking & explicit. I could handle normal love scenes & nudity at that age,but was unprepared for sadism.torture & S&M type sexual violence.
So I did not see the entire film until just a few years ago when I was more mature at age 17. I was able to appreciate the film then, but it was too much at age 12. Yet as startled as I was by the first 30 minutes,I probably would have been traumatized with what happens in the last 60 minutes
then again I had a 'traumatizing' type reactino to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre at 12,but loved the film then & still do. Hey,those type of reactions from horror films are good & very rare sadly!
One thing you could do is warn them ahead of time "This movie contains some strong graphic content, such as sex, nudity & violence, are you sure you can handle that?" & let them decide if they want to view it or not..& see how they react.
A very simple solution rather than keeping your hand on the remote, not able to enjoy the film & always panicing on what is or will be happening, skipping over various sequences & just not actually viewing the film itself.
Or you could do just that & be like my relatives who find The Lion King 'offesive' & 'too scary' for kids,so they fast forward 95% of the film to skip over any supposed 'sexual inuendoes' & 'scary scenes'(chases by guards etc). The result is not pretty & I told them how pathetic they were & left the room, since they were destroying the film experiance. This happened when I was 14!
