Please set this straight for me

Theirs always been debates about full screen and wide screen. Can people please tell me why one is better then the other, and what the advantages/disadvantages are?

My question is: Why would you want anything not in the OAR?

As I replied to another post exactly like this one earlier this week, it is not a question of "better"

Widescreen as it is referred to is the way the movie was made.

Full screen has had the image altered to fit a TV screen.

Simply put, next time you go to the movies take a look at the screen. The image will probably not fill all of the screen and they may use curtains to mask the blank area. Look at the ratio of width to height. Now imagine what they need to do to put that onto a TV that is basically square.

A widescreen movie fits it all onto the screen by preserving that ratio, hence the reason for the bars at the top and bottom. The full screen version fills up your TV with "part" of the larger overall image.

Here is a good link to start.

http://www.widescreen.org/widescreen.shtml

Finally, there is really no debate at all. Only informed and uninformed opinion.

Kinda rude, don't you think? No need to scare off newbies.

Welcome Libby! Follow Brian Shannon's link, that will do well in getting you started towards understanding the difference.

...alright! I'll bite!... if you really love movies, then movies that were made to be seen in widescreen (1.66:1, 1.78:1, 1.85:1, 2.0:1, 2.20:1, 2.35:1, 2.40:1, 2.55:1, 2.76:1) should/oughta/haveta be watched in widescreen...

...otoh, if you don't give a damn one way or the other, then - !by all means! - you can watch them in "fullscreen" aka "foolscreen" - but don't be surprised if (some/alotof) people (on this Forum) will consider you a below-contempt, no-good J6P...

There are tons of links in this thread:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=160736

that will give you all you need to know about this issue. Go to the "Aspect Ratios, Widescreen, 16x9" section.

It's insulting to refer to it as widescreen. Please use the term vertically challenged.

I buy in OAR - original aspect ratio - when available. So far the only title that has not been available is The Shadow which I bought in fullscreen. When I am renting it is a different story. I have a 20 inch television and the actors are mighty small on a 2.35:1 film. I rented fullscreen for Bend it Like Beckham, Scooby Do, and a few others that I can't remember. If I had a 30+ inch television I would never watch another film that was not in OAR. That is not the case...

Yet!!!

I buy movies in their original aspect ratio. I really enjoy classic hollywood movies and their original aspect ratio if 4:3 which is fullscreen. Newer movies (from about 1953) were filmed with different aspect ratios like 2.35:1 or 1.78:1 (closest to a 16:9 widescreen TV shape) so I buy those in "widescreen" format. So I guess you can say, I like both fullscreen AND widescreen.

And that's the polite ones. I'm likely to call you a hare-brained, malodorous, toffee-nosed, scruffy-looking nitwit.

Oh, I'm sorry, you wanted discussion, this is personal jihads.

For discussion: movies are made in a certain shape. The DVD that retains that shape is the right one.

Cheers!

Amen. Uh, Milo, that's what "J6P" means.

The other point (that some just can't fathom), is that the shape of your TV is inconsequential, only the movie counts.

I prefer to only watch movies that are 2,850:1. My tv is 57 inches wide and the movie only shows up 3 pixels tall. Kind of a pain, but you'll not find a wider screen around.

I prefer them to modify the image to make it wider, so all I get is black bars, it is very cheap this way, becuase after a while I just watch a blank screen, and imigine the movie.

Both

I buy fullscreen if the wide is 2.35:1 and my 32" is turned into a 20" in viewable image.

I buy wide if its 1.85:1 or closer to full.

92 votes thus far and only two prefer Fullscreen exclusively (and three actually buy both??)

If this unscientific poll is a microcosm (always wanted to use that word..although I have no idea if I spelled it right) of the general DVD population you gotta wonder if separate FS and WS releases are going to disappear completely in the near future.

Widescreen

For me first thing is first is the movie/show. If I like it I will buy it whether it is in full screen or widescreen but lately I have noticed how much of widescreen actually shows. So I prefer Widescreen over Fullscreen but if it is only avaiable in Fullscreen I'll be getting it but I prepfer Widescreen. My vote was the #100 to vote for Widescreen. Lucky Me!
