Robotech Remastered: Extended Edition 1/27!!
The official Robotech websited announced today that they will be rereleasing all of the Robotech episodes in 5.1 sound, newly remastered transfers, and extended scenes to include violence and other things that were cut back in the eighties. I really hate to rebuy all of these, but I am a huge Robotech fan and can not pass this up. All three series will be rereleased. there was no word on any extras. MSRP: $29.99 for 12 episodes, which averages out to be the same that we paid for the series the first go round. Here is the anouncement from Robotech.com:

ADV Films today announced the release of Robotech Remastered: Extended Edition, a complete remastering of all three acts of Harmony Gold's classic Robotech, the series that introduced generations of Americans to the art form and cultural phenomenon that is anime. The first DVD volume, which will include the first twelve episodes on two discs with a handsome art box fitting both discs, will go on sale everywhere January 27, 2004.
Often compared to Star Trek and Star Wars, Robotech is a uniquely addictive and complex intergalactic drama drawn across generations, spinning together hard-hitting mecha action and richly developed characters over the course of three acts: The Macross Saga; Robotech Masters; and New Generation. Robotech has become a major merchandising force, with movies, graphic novels, books, and toys incorporating and elaborating on the story.
This newest release from ADV Films features a fresh, clean digital transfer of Robotech from the original film stock, returning the series to a lovely and near-pristine state without compromising the character of the original animation. New footage featuring scenes cut from the original broadcast version of Robotech has been added and also featuring new opening and closing credits and eye catches, creating a never-before-seen version of this seminal adventure series.
Additionally, the audio has been restored and remixed to create the highest-quality sound experience available. Robotech Remastered: Extended Edition ($29.98 SRP) will feature two new audio tracks: the original, classic English-language dub in glorious digital 5.1 sound and a Spanish-language digital 5.1 track. In addition to the upgraded audio, the release is also subtitled in English.
Here are some images of the newly restored footage and the packaging:

I was wondering how long it would take for a Macross purist to pop in. Many of us grew up with Robotech and prefer Robotech. If that is not you, no big deal. I like the voice actors, the storylines (plot holes and all), and don't care for subtitles.

Hmmm....I watched Robotech in the 80's but was unaware of the way they put them together (from three different shows per the Animeigo website). Knowing this, I'd probably opt for the Japanese originals like darqleo.

I could *swear* I remember them posting that they couldn't do any restoration on the masters since they were so old. Well, the joke's on me cause I'm gonna buy this anyway, but that's very frustrating.

Crap.
So, I know that this news is new, but do we know if the new Remastered sets will include the Extra discs, as in the previous sets?
Do we expect that there will eventually be "Saga Sets", like were released for Macross, Southern Cross and New Generation, AFTER the 3 DVD box sets were released?
I'll wait for some reviews before I dole out the funds for this again. I loved this show as a kid, and I still enjoy it now. Only if the remaster ROCKS, will I risk a divorce over buying it again.

Hi,
Stupid question from me...but is this just 1 DVD? Isn't there like 85 episodes? Is this DVD the whole Macross Saga? Are they're going to remaster all of the episodes?

Boo! I have to say that I won't be falling for this again. The original release is incredibly poor. Some of the episodes even have a vertical line running through it.
I think I'll be putting them on eBay and purchasing Macross, Mospaeda and Southern Cross, which are all available seperately.

And here's the explanation why they couldn't remaster it before but now they can:

19.99 plus tax
2 discs - 6 episodes per disc.
I just watched the first three episodes. I like what they have done. The sound is awesome in 5.1, extra scenes put in, what more could you want
