The Press Release:

DIANE LANE
Stars In
UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN
Escape To Adventure And Romance on DVD February 3, 2004
BURBANK, Calif., November 12, 2003 – Touchstone Home Entertainment, who brought audiences “Sweet Home Alabama,” invites you to escape with Academy Award® nominee Diane Lane to beautiful Tuscany in search of adventure and unexpected surprises in UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN, on DVD and VHS on February 3, 2004. This acclaimed film, set in the vibrant and stunning Tuscan countryside, is the theatrical box office hit that has won over critics and film audiences alike. Featuring a breakthrough performance by Diane Lane (Best Actress nominee, “Unfaithful,” 2002) the romantic comedy UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN is available just in time for Valentine’s Day. On DVD, audiences will be treated to deleted scenes, and get a special insiders look at filming in Italy with filmmaker and cast interviews including Diane Lane and Under The Tuscan Sun novelist Frances Mayes. There is also insightful feature audio commentary with Director Audrey Wells, and the DVD is available in separate widescreen and full-frame editions. UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN will be available for $29.99 (S.R.P.) on DVD and $24.99 (S.R.P.) on VHS.

The life of freshly divorced San Francisco writer Frances Mayes (Diane Lane) is about to take an unexpected but much needed upturn. Trying to shake Frances out of her lethargy and post-breakup funk, her friend Patti (Sandra Oh, TV’s “Arliss;” “The Princess Diaries”) offers Frances a gift that she hopes will do the trick: a ten-day trip to Tuscany, in the heart of Italy. And right there, under the Tuscan sun, the unlikeliest thing happens: Frances impulsively buys a run-down villa named “Bramasole” – literally, “something that yearns for the sun” – and in so doing, plunges herself into a brand new life. As she embraces the local ways and devotes herself to the restoration of her new home, Frances finds herself forming close bonds with the people around her and slowly rediscovering the pleasures of laughter, friendship and romance. Even as she stumbles forward on her uncertain journey, one thing becomes clear: in life, there are second chances.

Screen Story and screenplay by Audrey Wells. Based on the book Under The Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. Produced by Tom Sternberg and Audrey Wells. Executive Producers Laura Fattori, Sandy Kroopf, Mark Gill. Directed by Audrey Wells.

Cover looks great. Just like the movie poster. Just glad there's no big head of Diane Lane.

Yeah, she's beautiful.

I haven't seen this, but definitely find Diane Lane to be yummy. I like a number of "chick flicks" but I'm not sure if this would be a good blind buy.

I'll probably wait to see if she's nominated for one of the little gold guys and then pick it up if she is. I try to see all of the major oscar nominees so I know better how to bet in the pools play along at home.

Small quirk, but if I were Frances Mayes, I'd be pretty pissed off about being referred to as the 'novelist' of UtTS - it's a memoir, not a novel. And any resemblance between the book and the movie is entirely coincidental...

Dan - Sorry, what part wasn't I clear about?
The book UtTS was a non-fiction account of a middle-aged poet in a committed relationship buying a Tuscan villa with her partner and fixing it up. Lots of travel stuff, lots of food stuff, lots of musing about history, time, aging, art, nature, etc, etc.
No sassy girlfriend. No hunky Italian love interest. Nobody who looked even remotely like Diane Lane... The film-makers basically kept the idea of an American woman buying a Tuscan villa and grafted a romantic comedy to it.

Nice to see that Men can enjoy it to. Since it is classified as a "chick flick."

Somewhat unfairly I think. Still it's done good business at the boxoffice ($43 million so far) and I'm sure will do well overseas and on DVD and home video as well!

I'm pleased Diane Lane has proved she can 'carry' a movie!
