www.moviesunlimited.com:
Get in the dvd section, and do a search for "Sid and Nancy", and the Criterion will be included in the listings. They're limiting purchases to one per customer (an admirable policy for an out-of-print item, in my opinion).
Not that admirable. When the deal first emerged, they were selling it for the SRP of $39.

Because they have the right to this until Dec, doesn't this mean that they still have right to produce and ship copies to retailers until the magic date?
Yes. I imagine one of the reasons they aren't releasing any DVDs in December is because they're pressing so many of these four.

Actually they were selling below list. IIRC it was $34. As the supply dwindled but the demand remained the price went up. A textbook lesson in economics.

It's a Criterion tradition not to release any DVD on December. Lots of collectors speculate that either Criterion wants buyers to save some money for the holiday season, or the Criterion staff need a break during the season.

Just got the Hitch box at overstock for $80.50 shipped, which is about $45 cheaper than the B&M's like Best Buy and Tower and better than any on-line deal I could find.

Use the link in this thread - http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...ight=overstock

When you put the box into your cart 10% will be taken off the $87.89 price, then tack on $1.40 shipping. Stock is very low so hurry.

I got the Hitchcock Box, Night and Fog, and Thomas Paine's Common Sense for $93.49 at Overstock. Google for 'overstock coupons' and you should find a link for a $10 off $100 coupon for those who don't want to create a new account.

I realized recently that once a Criterion goes OOP, renting it is next to impossible. I'm off to rent the two unknowns to figure out if they have any repeat replay value. Thanks for the heads up.

That's a good question, i've been wondering about that myself. They'll probably discontinue it since a 2 movie boxset seems rather pointless.

Buy movies to watch them, not as an investment tool.

I ordered from a place that was out of stock and still got it the same week a week ago. I think there are still plenty in the channel even with the weasels buying it speculatively.

Just because an online retailer doesnt have it in stock, doesn't mean they cant get another one within a few days.

I agree with TheHistorian that your money is better invested to get yourself DVDs that you will enjoy rather than to speculate. Given the fairly large number of SD:CC pressed and the relatively small actual fanbase for the film, I don't think that it'll rise too sharply in price.

Once people can get $10 more than they paid for it, ebay will be flooded with them. Look at how many Robocop:CCs are for sale. It's a very similar situation (only alot more Robocop fans.)

Salo was a very peculiar situation. 400 Blows used to also command extreme prices, then another R1 release undercut it.

I'd guess that the new license holder will release their own version of SD.

I just wish we'd get a nice release of Cross of Iron......

thanks. when i search for the boxset, i typed hitchcock boxset, and it didnt return any results.

it's cheaper to buy the boxset than the individual dvd of rebecca, notorious, and spellbound.

From: You have moved into a dark place. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
Out of print, schmout of print.

In three years we'll all be buying our new HD-DVDs and the price of SD-DVDs will drop.

If you're going to invest in DVDs to re-sell you have to do it quickly. Look at all of those suckers who bought up those Tati discs only to have them re-released at a lower price point.

To which I can only say "Serves them right."

And add "I'm glad I sold mine early-on."

$ is the last thing I see when looking through my library. I've never collected to re-sell, trade or whatever. many of these titles will last a very long time in my collection, unless manufacturing issues piss on my parade. to think that my entire library will be replaced with HD-DVD is nuts. yeah....Mondo Bizarro and Blast-Off Girls on a SE HD-DVD...

As DVDs go, the CC edition of "Straw Dogs" is really, really nice. Which suggests (to me at least) that over time it will continue to be a relatively popular title, especially as some of today's younger DVD aesthetes begin discovering "older" directors and investing in high-end titles (well, high end titles that don't rhyme with "spord of the swings, swimmited perdition cox pet," I mean).

And then of course there's that next generation of Criterion completists to consider....

Well the only Criterion I've seen is Chasing Amy - not old school at all, so this will be my first introduction to old films on the Criterion Collection. I paid $112.XX shipped for the Hitchcock boxset and Straw Dogs.
