No, this is my new hobby.

I got my first DVD in March of this year, and I have about 330 or so. I do set a limit of at least 30 a month. I will probable tire of this and slow down.

For those of you wondering what Amy "Strangers With Candy" Sedaris out of make-up: http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Events/1770...773066_400.jpg

Now that I'm a teenage male with a job, I have a disposable income. This means that I can buy even more DVDs. I can't go a week now with at least buying one DVD. The only problem I have are with boxsets as they're more costly than single DVD releases. While there are some boxsets that are a must (ex: Buffy), I can wait to own Angel and Family Guy and Simpsons on DVD.

Now if I could stop spending money on DVDs and save up some money for an additional DVD rack....

I know I have a problem

In the last few weeks I've bought Lion King, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Sleeping Beauty, Trekkies, They, Signs, Dahmer, Oz The First Season, Legends of the Ring, Pride FC Cold Fury, 8 DVD Box of Classic Superstars of Wrestling, Tigerland, Mickey's House of Villains and The Sopranos Season 2.

So far I've only watched Trekkies and most of my collection are still sealed. I have probably close to 700 DVDs I intend on watching some day. Pray for me...I think I've lost my mind.

a problem? lets see. I buy anywhere from 10 to 20 titles per week. every other day...I'm placing an order somewhere. I NEVER use credit cards. it's cash only, all the time. and if you know how to control a budget...you are not out of control. if you are over 25 and have no idea how to budget...you need to take a class and learn.

I'll top off at around 1,800 to 2,000 titles. I'm just past 1,300 now. I'm building the perfect, personal film library for enjoyment, reference and historical research. when HD-DVD hits...I'll buy selected titles. I wont be replacing something like Zombie Lake or Venom.

problem? hell no. I'm in complete control. off to buy my 4 titles that just arrived at Borders.

The TV Show seasons are what gets to me because they keep coming out with new ones for shows that I think have significant rewatchability.

I get all the Buffy and Angel sets. And the Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, King of the Hill, South Park sets are a must for me, not only because I love the shows, but my kids love them, too.

And with the classic television shows coming out, I have to pick up the ones of the shows I've just adored for years. The Dick Van Dyke show? I can watch that every day. Mary Tyler Moore? Same deal (though they make it easy to not buy 'em when they don't release them). But at $40 or more a pop, it does become expensive to keep up.

Shows like 24, Alias, and the like. I can do just fine renting those. So that helps... (Actually, I just watch 24 and Alias. I don't bother renting them to rewatch. But if I hadn't watched them, I would be fine watching them on rental).

When I first started collecting I would only get the films I really really wanted, but now I'm finding I'm getting all sorts of movies, mainly to get more genres I may be lacking in. I've already bought 4 expensive DVDs in the past 2 days, and the week is only halfway over.
True that not doing things like drugs or drinking makes it a little more excusable to spend so much on DVDs (that's my out, anyway), but thanks to some good old gamblind last weekend, I now have plenty of disposable cash at my finger tips ($133 from $3 of my own money). Matter of fact, everytime I've gone to the Casino, I've usually hit it fairly big on the slots everytime and there's only been one time where I should've stopped but didn't and ended up $5 in the hole. Last time though, as soon as I won that aforementioned money off of three dollars of my own cash, I decided to cash out, get my money, and just watch my friends gamble for the rest of the night. Wasn't that easy to do, but it'll pay off on Tuesday when I can spend a fair amount with no guilty feelings lingering. Easy come, easy go, right?

And as far as TV box sets go, I only buy 'em if I know I'll watch them again and again (Simpsons, Family Guy are just a couple that I got my money's worth within the first couple weeks just because I watched them with different people so many times). When it comes to shows like 24, I'll pass, as great as they are. A show like that, you only REALLY need to watch one time through and then after that, it's not like you can just sit down and watch any random episode, since they all rely on the other 23 episodes. I hope that makes sense. I'd gladly take 'em as gifts or buy them if they were cheaper, but until then, I'm satisfied with just watching them through a friend since I know it's not likely I'll watch them again anytime soon.

Well I'm really to busy to go to the movies or out so for the price of one family to go to the theater I can buy a boxed set or a few movies. If I am able to get time to go out I will not spend it on dvd's

who am i kidding i'll still get the dvd's

We need a support group for our addiction.

Heh, I think anyone who actually pays for those things are a little foolish. Maybe it's just because that stuff can be had anywhere for little or nothing, but I can't imagine paying for it. That may make me a cheapskate, but ah well. I'm not into any of it too much anyway, so I don't think it's a crime that I rarely throw down.

How many people that frequent DVDTalk would include access to every film/tv show upon request in their definition of heaven (better memory recall would come in handy also)?

No, I am in total control. I place an absolute monetary limit on DVD purchases each month. I buy what I want , but only at the rate at which I can afford to do so.

Yeah my buying is a little out of control. I almost always buy something I want on release day even if I can't really afford it at the moment and know I won't watch it right away. Oh well, it's only money.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Although I don't place a limit. I just pay bills, buy food, take care of the family, etc. and if there's anything left over, I treat myself. If there's nothing left over, than I dip into my small stack of unwatched discs (currently around a dozen). I've found that a small pile of unwatched discs is what helps me keep my priorities in order.

Yes.

What started out as a little hobby has now ballooned into an obligation that I have to maintain.

When you have a good collection (see link below), you can't just go cold-turkey.

But I will slow down soon.

My DVD buying was starting to get out of control especially this summer, but I started to slow down a bit after school started. After CH decided to start being insane my buying habit has almost ceased to exist. I'm sure it will pick back up at some point.
