I don't have 1000 but just a few hundred. ( boy and i thought i had a butt load..) I keep all my dvds in the front room on book shelves with shelves added as they never give you enough shelves to make it work well as a dvd holder.. as I just bought my second bookshelf I started looking at what I am going to do when i fill that up... I was looking at the BOLTZ racks - very nice looking but way expensive.. I refuse to box up or double stack dvds weather i watch them or not so I have to come up with some way to proudly display my collection.. I have been toying with the idea with running shelves accross the walls near the cealing (a litte lower to be reachable but still out of the way) so i can ring the room in movies.. not sure if my wife would go for that... I did get her to go for my movie theater motief for that room though.. red drapes along the walls and in front of that big picture window (sun light is a killer)
on a side note how do you all keep track of movies? how many have you lost from the uhhhhh who the hell did i loan that to...
Luckily I work for a software company that makes software for video stores.. so I use our software at home and have all my movies barcoded both the case and the discs and actually check the movies out to friends/family so i can keep track of them. the program i use alos has a webpage option and I use that so friends/family can see what i have and whats "in"
i can customize the page but i never bother to .. i just set up some ugly colors so things stand out .. but heres a link to my list.

We do make a cheap program ($300) that might intrest some of you with a lot of movies.. doesnt have the web option but its a way to track, "rent", and report on your moives.

I only have about 200; but the storage solution I have for them, is the most compact I've seen. If you're not hell-bent on displaying them, and I'm not (bigger wow factor when you do whip them out
)
http://www.can-am.ca. The MC3Ds will hold about 360 DVDs each and take up about 18"x18"x36" They offer formica tops for them to make them look a little less commercial. My walls are brick, so the commercial aesthetic works very nice. If I can remember I'll post a pic.
Anyway, they're a tad pricey - I think I paid about $550/each, but they're very sturdy.

I have little over 600 and have a problem with storage. I can't imagine what I'd do with over 1000 dvds. Anyway once I ran out of shelf space I've been using drawers, and then just putting them anywhere I can find space. I have to go on a hunt sometimes if I want to watch a particular DVD.

I am building shelves into a closet in my rec room, I got these particular shelves from Ikea, the are 7" deep and will cover all three sides of the closet. I have light in the closet and am finishing the room in an Ancient Egyptian theme. I am saving a ton of room versus prefab shelving that is almost always 10-12" deep, plus I can set the height of the shelves to my liking (no wasted space between shelves). I will have plenty of extra room after I store 630 DVDs plus around 500 CDs. The best part is I close the door and my room doesn't look like a video store.

I think that one of the best options to minimize floor/wall space taken up by your collection is to use carousels. I have a couple of Tokyo 880 Multimedia carousels, they store about 450 DVDs each (they claim 532, but not if you have box sets, double amrays, etc). They're about 5 feet tall, and 19 inches to a side (needing about 27 inches clearance), and cost about $200-$250 after shipping. If I were to make some, (and I'm still thinking about it), I'd make them at least 6 feet tall, and probably a little wider.

I havent counted in a while, maybe Ill do that tomarow. I always miss some though eithor at friends houses or something along those lines.

I picked up some clear underbed boxes from The Container Store, similar to these. They fit two rows of DVDs, spine up, and slide right under the bed. I keep the "on deck" discs and my favorites on a shelf next to the TV, but the overflow goes in the boxes.

I have close to 2000 DVD's. I custom built these two 7' 10" spinners. Each spinner holds about 700 DVD's and takes up 1.7 square feet of floor space. Combined, that is 1400 DVD's in less than 3.4 square feet of floor space.

I am desperately trying to stick with only buying movies that I definitely want to watch a few times over the next few years. Anything that doesn't qualify as that would be much cheaper to even rent a couple of times over that time frame. Trying to approach it the same way I would anything that has a poor release or might get double dipped.

I think it is also nice to have a variety for other people to come over to watch. My favorite thing is when someone is over and says "Which one do you want to watch?" I always tell them "I own them all, so I'll must like them all. I'll be happy to watch whichever one you pick." Sometimes, that is the best way to vary your watching patterns . . . let someone else pick the movie.

Collection Storage (not from a guy)
Shelves in closets in extra bedrooms - sorted by type (i.e, tv shows, documentaries) and alpha by type. One shelf (rotating from Sharper image) is "out in the open" in one of my extra bedrooms. The movies on the rotating rack are the ones I haven't seen yet - also in alpha.
I have over 650 movies and believe it or not, the closets are not cluttered.
