Did you read that on the internet or did you actually see the featurette on the Bug's Life DVD where they explain it?

Sometimes they add in ground and sky (Oh. Yay.) Sometimes they recomposite the scene and scoot characters closer together, but most times, they admit, that it just gets panned and scanned.
If I could fault Pixar for anything, it's pandering to the lowest common denominator. Though it could be a mandate from the mouse.

Wow.. just, wow.

I have all the pixar stuff and I actually watched different scenes back-to-back to compare. And, while the original wide-screen is obviously the superior choice, the full-screen isn't really off by that much.

I didn't mean to come off too snippy, there's just too many people that hear about that second-hand and think it a mandate from the angels above that Pixar movies are to be watched 1.33. I'm surprised nobody's brought up that ill-begotten James Cameron letter about the fullscreen Abyss...

A friend of ours brought their kid over and the two kids wanted to watch Monsters Inc. I popped it in and went to widescreen and their kid screamed "NO THE OTHER ONE!!!"

I just looked at his mother and shook my head disapprovingly.

Edit: the kid was four by the way.

Maybe he meant Shrek.... ;)

Nope. I tried to get them to watch Shrek first because the three year old had worn me out on Monsters already.

How does a four year old know there's "the other one"? Sheesh, the poor kid's been brainwashed before he even makes it into the educational system .

Oh well, let them enjoy it while they can. WS TV is the future and it's probably going to be here sooner than some of us think. I was just in a Best Buy the other day, and I would swear that WS TVs outnumbered regular TVs by 4 to 1, or better. And, I'm noticing this in other retail establishments as well.

Even in, shock and disbelief, Walmart! Although not by the 4 to 1 margin of Best Buy.

Why release them in the same package? So it can be number one on the best selling list, so people can find the version they want, so people don't return it when they find out they have the wrong version...

Personally, I don't like having P&S included.

What? Where does greed enter into it? Do you buy <b>both</b> otherwise?

I found out yesterday my dad only buys full screen given the option. I just sighed and shook my head jokingly.

"Widescreen isn't any better than full screen."
"Yes it is. Most of the time the image is cramped on full screen, or it's panning around."
"Well, at least with full screen I don't have those black bars. (-ohbfrank-) Widescreen is fine for people who have widescreen TVs."
"When you eventually buy one you'll having to rebuy most of your DVDs, or else you'll have black bars on the side."
"I'll never be able to afford a widescreen TV."

Luckily my mom is gung-ho about that kind of stuff. She has a 58" widescreen with a surround setup and in the new house she's building she's wiring the entire house for 5.1 or 7.1 (I can't remember). And she always buys the widescreen version (and is annoyed if it's not anamorphic :lol: ). I taught her well. ;)

Clearly, there's only one option. You have to put him in a home. It's the only answer.
