Texas Chainsaw Massacre re-release - which version to get?

TCM is being re-released next week, and some stores have two different versions listed. Dvdpricesearch also lists two different versions. As far as I can tell, they have the same features and the same MSRP. The only difference I can find is that there are two different covers - One has a picture of a chainsaw blade on the cover and the other looks like a package of ground hamburger meat.

Other than the covers, are there any differences in the two discs?
Also, since the price is the same, which should I get? Is one of the covers a limited version or something of that nature?

I believe it is a reversable cover! Can anyone confirm?

Disconnected 10-08-03 12:31 AM

The entire package is actually quite unusual looking. First of all the DVD case itself is one of those older type DVD jewel case things. The chainsaw/chopped meat cover is actually an outer slip cover that is made out of thin plastic. The chainsaw side is the front and the chopped meat side is the back. The front opens up in two halves, in other words if you were to open it one half would be in your left hand and the other in your right and this contains all of the info about the move in it. I actually like the packaging although I have never seen the movie. But the only problem that I can see with it is that because of the thin plastic the outer slip cover gets very easily scratched and every single one of the 20 copies i saw was scratched up pretty badly. Hope this helps anybody who cares.

If the new one is anamorphic, I may upgrade, but the features the first time around were really good, so I hope all that stays.

Forget those rereleases, if you want the definitive version and have an All Region DVD player, go here:
http://www.xploitedcinema.com/DVDs/DVDs.asp?title=935

It's one of the best purchases I have ever made.

The new one is the same disc as the old one but with new packaging and a lower price.

Christ on rollerskates. Did http://ads.kleinman.com/images/top_search.gif go out of style, or something?

NICE! Sweet cover, I may have to pick this up...

bobertkay99, is that region 2 version anamorphic?,

The new region 1 disc is not anamorphic, which is a shame, they could have taken 5 mintues and made the disc anamorphic, if they didn't want to bother with a new transfer

-sigh-

Since no-one is bothering to read the links ABOUT THIS TOPIC WHICH HAS BEEN DISCUSSED BEFORE...

THE REGION ONE PIONEER RELEASES, EVEN THE NEW ONE WHICH THEY CLAIM IS REMASTERED AND NEW, ARE NOT ANAMORPHIC AND THE TRANSFER IS NOT VERY GOOD IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS FILM DOES NOT EXIST IN A GOOD-LOOKING ANAMORPHIC RELEASE ANYWHERE. STUDIOS ARE, FOR SOME ODD REASON, RELUCTANT TO MAKE ANAMORPHIC RELEASES OF 1.66:1 FILMS. THE ONLY ANAMORPHIC RELEASE OF THIS FILM IS THE AUSTRALIAN PAL R4, WHICH LOOKS WORSE THAN THE NONANAMORPHIC VERSIONS!
Clear? ;)

Thanks for breaking it down for us lazy folks ;) You just saved me some cash because even though I knew it was the same transfer I just assumed in this day and age that it would be animorphic.
I will not be buying this.

Drive-In Nut 10-08-03 08:40 AM

Hey, is this release anamorphic? No one here seems to have made that clear.

is the cover actually white or black on this release? I ordered a copy a few days ago from amazon.co.uk and the cover was black. I just want to make sure I am getting the correct version.

Drive-In Nut 10-08-03 09:51 AM

Is there an amamorphic release anywhere, and does it look any better than the non-anamorphic releases? Ive done a search and havent found any info on this board.

read about 6 posts up.

kiddk1 10-08-03 10:58 AM

maybe I will head up to BB and rent it.

malkmuz 10-08-03 11:03 AM

I never got the 1st version since it was so gal-durn expensive, so I will pick up the re-release for chump change. Better than not owning it at all!

JJE-187 10-08-03 12:05 PM

That R2 cover looks like a glorified Criterion Collection cover, right down to the way the "Special Edition" is underlined with a thin line.
Not that that's a bad thing. The cover makes the film look like the masterpiece it is.

Now about what Disconnected said, does this come in one of those annoying Super Jewel Cases like the very first Evil Dead DVD did? or am I just reading his post wrong?

bobertkay99 10-08-03 01:01 PM

I think that white cover is some kind of Limited Edition release. Because I got the black cover as well. And quite honestly, I thought the R2 release was anamorphic. I have a Widescreen TV and had to do no modifications for the entire picture to fill up my screen.

Giorgio 10-08-03 01:22 PM

The white packaging is a HMV exclusive...

George

bobertkay99 10-08-03 01:27 PM

Whats "HMV"?

profbobo 10-08-03 01:44 PM

My friend in the UK said he just bought the white cover instead of the black one ... didn't mention anything about a limited edition, so maybe it's just luck of the draw?

I'm going to order the R2 soon ... I can't deal with subpar R1 releases anymore!
