Will the original TCM ever make it to DVD? I hope that if it does its anamorphic.

ChrisHicks 10-14-03 10:59 AM

UPDATE:

I just got this disc and let me tell you, it is amazing. it has a brand new 2 hour documentary and over 30 min. of deleted scenes. it is now anamorphic and has been remastered with Dolby Digital EX 5.1. it also sports 3 seperate audio comm. I suggest everyone rush out and get this masterpiece now.

:D

darmok 10-14-03 11:15 AM

i just picked up this movie this morning, and let me say, the packaging sucks....that clear flimsy slipcover is the most scratched up thing i ever seen for a dvd. i went thru about 15 of them, and they were all like that. not to mention the crummy hard-plastic jewel case...

ChrisHicks 10-14-03 11:21 AM

try getting one at CC. they put one of those security tag stickers on the cover then stuck another price tag sticker over that. the price sticker comes off pretty easily but the security one won't come off for nothing.

Dude... that's not hamburger. ;)

I got my R2 copy today and I got the black case. pretty nice package except for the fact that it looks like someone sat on mine.

renaldow 10-14-03 01:28 PM

All this discussion makes me think I should hold off until the R4 full frame anamorphic DD 5.1 with commentary by projectionist Frank Suto and alternate 'vegetarian' ending comes out in Dec.

nyrotic 10-14-03 07:15 PM

Is it safe to buy R2's?

After reading all of these discussions, I have decided that I would prefer to get the R2 version. I'm just afraid of not being able to watch it. I have a 5-disc Panasonic DVD player that I bought in October 2002. Any chance it would play? Is there some hidden menu option that you can use to change the region? My local library of course only has R1's, so I don't have an R2 to play with. Just wondering what other R2 experts have found out.

renaldow 10-14-03 08:24 PM

That depends upon the model # of the player. Post it.

ChrisHicks 10-15-03 07:21 PM

don't use Goo Gone to remove any stickers on the case. it strips the black color right of the sleeve.

damn CC now my case is totaled.

freshticles 10-16-03 03:02 AM

i bought this thing today and as far as i can tell, it has no documentary on it...what the hell??

Mr. Cinema 10-16-03 08:42 AM

Walmart is carrying the version with the keep case. That's where I'm getting mine from. The cover is black with showing only the chainsaw.

renaldow 10-16-03 05:35 PM

I saw that version at Barnes & Noble too.

SNKapcom 10-17-03 09:41 PM

I just bought the keep case "amaray" version at Wal-Mart tonight. Pretty cool disc. I'm sort of glad that I got this version since it seems the raw hamburger version with the jewel case is pretty crappy packaging-wise. Just hope i'm not gonna regret buying the other version if it's gonna be like a rarity or something in the future with it supposedly being limted edition.

TheKing 10-17-03 10:23 PM

I saw a copy of the keep case version at Fry's.

My guess is that the crappy case is only around for the initial pressings, and that the keep case version will be around...kinda like the Resevior Dogs and MGM slipcover...

jough 10-17-03 11:21 PM

The new disc is listed as having a 16:9 transfer on most retail sites. Is this not the case?

Has anyone actually seen the disc and can confirm that it's actually not anamorphic?

There was an article in Post magazine about the new transfer. I can't imagine them not making it 16:9 if they're making a new master from the negative.

brombie 10-18-03 05:44 AM

I don't know how many of you remember, but Digital Bits posted a review of the previous DVD. They were very disappointed with the picture quality when it was compared to the LD version, which supposedly has the same transfer but obviously not.

They interviewed the producer of the LD version and it turned out Pioneer used the wrong transfer - the work-in-progress version. That version didn't have the glue lines digitally removed (the quote was 180 of 190 lines are all there) and has some other problems.

I am watching the new DVD halfway through right now. I noticed two things:
- It is NOT ANAMORPHIC :)
- I don't know what the glue marks supposed to look like, but I'm not noticing it.
- There is no dissolve problem that's mentioned in the interview.

So, it looks like this one has the transfer than the previous Special Edition was supposed to have. It explains all the confusion around whether the same transfer is used or not. The answer is yes and no :)

mattc_85 10-18-03 09:52 AM

I finally found a copy at a Wal-Mart. The woman told me that it was a black cover with Mass Production written across the top is this the current edition. Thanks.

R2 DVD

My DVD player is "Panasonic DVD-CP72S 5-Disc Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Silver)". The front of the manual says that it is a Region 1 player, and will only play discs marked with a Region 1 or with All Regions. Any idea if I might be able to sneak in an R2 disc? If so, then I want to get that version of TCM. I also noticed that there is an R2 version of "The Deer Hunter", which includes a commentary. The R1 version is as bare bones as you can get. Plus the picture and sound are awful (though I don't know if the R2 version will be any different). I don't understand why there are American films with better versions overseas!!

Thanks!

are there 15000 scratches all over and is there tons of grain? if so, then this is indeed the same print as the older version.

Not on mine there isn't. This is not that copy.

It's not anamorphic. Apparently you need a bigger imagination ;)

I haven't seen the older version but scratches and grains is not a big problem with this one. It is by no means clean and pristine, but if you read that article, this is probably the best we'll have now. The storage of the original materials was sub-par so there're a lot of scratches and glue marks when they unspool the negatives.
