i really think this kind of thread is helpful...
i was at YMF today, i took out the gift set then when i was waiting in line, one dude was talking about getting fullscreen of scarface...
the worker there showed him the back of the disc blah blah blah...
& it makes me think about the gift set... it must be hard to find out the fullscreen or widescreen for the gift set....
although they have the "spec" at the back of the box... but still... sometimes it confusing...
& you can't return it once you open it....

btw, I was happy to see the front aisle display at Circuit City - where half the titles were full screen and the other half were wide-screen (equal slotting).
The wide-screen were all gone and only a couple full-screens were gone. That's a good sign, people are catching on.
There were some more copies of wide-screen in the DVD aisle so it wasn't a wasted trip.

I saw this thread after I bought mine (got it Saturday actually), and I freaked because I knew I hadn't checked mine. Thankfully it was WS. What's weird is, I am VERY vigilant and always look at the back. I've never picked up an FS on accident. Something about this particular release made me not look. Maybe because I got it a collector-oriented specialty shop-I'm pretty sure they don't even carry FS. It could have been that since I saw it early I just snatched it up.
Either way, while I agree everyone should check the back, on releases like this where there is no differentiation on the front cover, it can't hurt to have a preemptive post.
EDIT: I don't have it in front of me, but I believe the spine has a small widescreen label on the top part. Hopefully that will help.

any reports on whether or not this Universal release is buggy? And no, Im not trying to be a smart ***, but after Meaning of Life, I need some sort of reassurance that I should buy this now, or wait a few months for replacement discs...

I thought the original Scarface was made in 1932 not 1931 but I may be wrong.

The Circuit City sticker everyone is talking about is the giant white one with the price on it that Circuit City has on all of their DVD's/CD's. The best thing I have learned to do is look on the top security sticker. If there are two versions it will always say which one it is on there. It is IMO much easier than looking on the back of the case.

Although I always check anyway (and I even wear my glasses so I can read the tiny print), these kinda posts are still helpful. I was unaware that two versions were coming out, and it made me EXTRA careful to pick the right one. Since the Best Buy I went to hadn't labeled the racks with the two versions, I did actually grab a few fullscreens before realizing that the entire row was FS (like I said, they hadn't labeled the racks yet). As I was checking out the WS box, a guy with his little girl in tow picked up one of the FSs that I had just put back. I thought for a sec and decided to mention it to him (I usually never talk to people I don't know). He didn't say anything, but looked at the DVD like there was something wrong with it. Being the introvert that I am, I wandered off instead of waiting to see if he got a different copy, but I still felt I had done my job.

Also, no movies were made in widescreen until 1955. the first widescreen was used on roger and hammerstein's Oklahoma.

Each scene in Oklahoma! was filmed twice, once in Todd-AO (70 mm, 30 fps, 2.20:1) and once in Cinemascope (35 mm, 24 fps, 2.55:1). The Todd-AO version is considered superior.
Oklahoma! was the first movie filmed in Todd-AO but it was far from being the first widescreen film.

I also appreciate this thread, as I also had no idea two versions of this film were being released and would never have thought to read the back of such a large release to make sure it was widescreen. Maybe some ghetto backwoods release I would check to see if it was widescreen, but Scarface after remastering? Kind of a no-brainer to release this in widescreen only. Unfortunately that is who is running the studios...

I always do a thorough check, but this thread was helpful... why?? Because for some reason, on this disc, Universal ditched the helpful grid on the back... I always check that grid just to make sure...and on this one, they only mention the aspect ratio in print (no diagram) and with all the rest of the text on the back, one could easily overlook it... of course, the store I picked it up at had nice stickers they made that said "widescreen" but... if they didn't, this thread would have been slightly helpful!

Do they have different discs of this out there? Mine had a cardboard folder around the case that said widescreen on the front and back. On the back of the cardboard it also said the specs.
Plus, the store gave away with it a great full size movie poster.

I've made the mistake of purchasing Full Screen once, but since then, I always check and double check. I thought this thread was very informative. I think Pixy needs to get the proverbial sand out of his vagina.

I went to the BestBuy in NYC (Chelsea) during lunch today. Picked up a copy of Scarface from the shelf and then remarked to myself how someone could overlook the fact that its not the widescreen version (having read this thread already).
I put the disc back and looked through two separate shelves that had copies of Scarface and there were no widescreen versions left. I asked a BestBuy employee who happened to be standing nearby (who was not helping people picking up copies of Scarface to make sure they got the right one) if they had any more widescreen copies.
"Sold out. We don't have anymore. We only have the Full Screen [Full Frame] ones."
Then 4 people behind me who were holding copies of Scarface in their hands did a collective "what?!" and noticed they did not have a widescreen copy in their hands and promptly put them back.
There must have been 60+ copies of FS Scarface sitting there. I was thinking they might be "sold out" of the WS in order to get people to buy the Gift Set (which they also had plenty of).

If I'm not sure if there's going to be separate WS and FS versions, I usually go to one of the on-line stores and do a search on the title to see if it brings up separate versions. If it does, I'm just more careful (double checking the aspect ratio) when I pick up the DVD from the B&M.
