If my memory serves me correctly isn't the alternate ending included in the documentary on the 25th anniversery edition. If this is right I would suggest getting the 25th anniversery edition that way you get the original version of the movie and if you really want to you can still view the alternate ending.

What are the details of the super rare collectors version that was released with actual film cells, etc? I remember seeing info about this at one time. Wasn't it like $200.00?

Yes it's anamorphic, with a DD 5.1 mix. Picture is quite good for a flick that's so old. Looks nice on my set.
Here's a great review of the entire DVD : http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/a-m/exorcist/

BUY the 25th Anniversary. The original cut is better, the sound is good even if it's not as revved up as VYNS, and the "Fear of God" doc is GREAT.
Then, if you're in the mood for the extra stuff, give VYNS a rent.
I actually own both. 25th ANN was one of the first three dvd's I bought, and I picked up VYNS through Columbia House because it was cheap and it seemed like something I might as well have in the library. I can honestly say that I've only watched it once since I bought it, whereas I've watched the 25th Ann. about five or six times.

I wouldn't go so far as to label you insane, but as DavidH says, the 25th anniversary DVD does use a subtle digital morph during the scene where Father Karras is possessed to hide what previously was a jump cut.

Fair enough. I guess I missed that. Something to look for on my next viewing, I guess.

I think the morph is mentioned in the commentary? It's been a while since I listened to it. Anyway, the Blatty commentary is more like an audio essay rather than a scene specific commentary. It doesn't even go the length of the film.
