I only loan DVDs to one person that I know will take care of the discs, but only the disc. He's in a wheelchair and carries everything around in a backpack. First and last time I gave him the cases along with the discs, I got Almost Famous Bootleg back with alot of damage.
Bought a few blank cases and use them for trading. Works well, and don't have holes in my collection from missing cases.

Cisco, that was WONDERFUL! Thanks so much for the link. Dang, I just love it! The EXACT way that many of us think.
Yeah, comparing giving a friend a can of soda to borrowing a DVD is NOT comparing apples & oranges, because the two things are not EVEN as related as apples & oranges. At least apples & oranges are both fruits!
At my house, sure you can have a soda, a beer, a snack, let's even make some popcorn, want an apple or an orange? No problem! Borrow a DVD when you leave, "sorry, I don't loan them out to ANYBODY!"
Learned my lesson back YEARS AGO when I used to loan books and have them never come home, or come home with sticky food products between pages, or even worse, unidentifiable substances between pages! Yeeeccchhh!

No....to be totally honest none of my friends even know how many DVD's i have nor what DVD's i actually own..i may mention i own a particular one in conversation but that's it...my DVD's are kept in my 'spare' room so there is no reason for anyone other than myself to ever go in there.
I've never been asked to lend a DVD i owned to anyone....as a rule DVD's never enter the topic of conversation or prove a factor in my social life so they are purely a personal pleasure/habit of mine.

I've only lent out one DVD so far and I got it back in good condition. I'll keep lending out BUT
-No criterions/box sets/OOPs et cetera.
-The person must be someone I know and seem capable of taking good care of the discs. If you make even one scratch, after that it's Blockbuster for you
-No taking 5 DVDs off my shelf and saying "I'll watch em sometime". In fact, not even 3 or 2. If you don't give them back reasonably soon, it's Blockbuster for you.

I only lend out my DVD to a select few(5) good friends(mostly relatives blood/in-laws).
These are the same people I would lend most anything to without hesitation. They also would do the same for me. I value their friendship far more than some material item.
Everyone else the answer is "NO".

Man I love when this thread pops up every few months. It pleases me that I'm not the only one who refuses to lend out his DVDs.
My problem is that people NEVER seem to return them in a timely manner. I figure that if you ask to borrow a movie, you probably want to see it, right? Well why would you wait weeks and weeks to see it after I've lent it to you? Then I feel like a jerk asking for it.
I have a co-worker who is also a collector who I happily share with. No fingerprints and I know I'm going to get them back in a couple of days.

There is no point in ruining a perfectly good friendship because you are too cheap to pay $3 bucks to rent it from Blockbuster. If you're too cheap to pay $3, I know you're too cheap to pay the $20 it will cost to replace it once you scratch it or damage it.

It'll do good since people will think I put it up as a joke, but will then hesitate and think twice before they actually ask!

Thanks for all the comments, but I wasn't the one who came up with the "Blockbuster" rant. I would love to give credit to the person who wrote it but I can't remember where I got it from. I've had it bookmarked for a few months now. So to the person whoever wrote this little gem, thanks!

Usually my friends just want me to bring a movie to their house, and that way I make sure nobody plays anything like table hockey with the disc.
Though a year or so ago I lent a DVD to a sort-of friend (same circle but she was a snot most of the time) After mentioning returning it here and there for about 4 months, she finally returned it. The box was scratched up, the cover was torn and she spilled nailpolish remover on the disc! Why she had that near my DVD, I don't know. She gave me a couple of dollars and I didn't want to seem mean (I'm a dope) so I just took it. I should have learned my lesson when "friends" always walked off with a bunch of my books throughout grade school.
I learned to never lend anything to acquaintances, especially if they're manicure inclined.

I loan to a couple of friends and to my sister. They are all very careful with my DVDs and usually return them in a reasonable amount of time. I do have a one strike policy with everyone I loan to however. Damage or lose a DVD and you are out. No more DVDs for you!

Only to my sister and brother-in-law. There pretty good at getting them back and taking care of them. And they usually never ask, i am the one that brings it up. She brought up the fact that she wanted to see Hairspray since they saw the play on Broadway in NYC, so i ran up to my room and gave it to her. I didn't think she'd like it since John Waters is an acquired taste, but they went out and bought it a few days later.

I lend them out to my friends. I mean really, we all have classes together so it's not like I don't seem them damn near every day. I know where they live and they know how anal I am so everybody wins (most of them collect DVD's anyway so they understand).
I can't watch every single movie every minute of the day so why let them sit there and collect dust?

I do loan mine out, sometimes even to friends of friends. Right now, I have Farscape season 1 loaned out, and I'm more happy that my sister and brother-and-law are discovering an awsome show than I am worried about the discs.

That page sums it up perfectly! Next time it's a flat out NO.
