city of god cancelled?

I know it was never officially announced, but for a couple of weeks there, several online retailers were showing a street date of 12/16. Now it seems to be gone from everyone's site : /

It's still up at Amazon, at least as of right now. I just checked my wish list where I keep track of release dates.

So now the question is this:

Should I order the HK R3 or the UK R2?

Region coding is a joke, region free is the way to beeeee!

I swear they do this with DVDs I'm desperately anxious for.

Punch-Drunk Love went through the same thing... now this.

Simply incredible.

well, here's a suggestion:

Why don't you order the special edition (2DVDset) from Brazil which is also NTSC not PAL (R4). This way you avoid the PAL speed up many of you fret over. It is quite possible that the disc might come out as R0 for which you wont need a region-free player so.....anyhow here's the order info:

http://www.dvdbrazil.com/comersus/st...?idproduct=574

ps
DVDBrazil.com are very reliable...I have used them a few times and their packages come to the States in about a week (tops I had a package come to Chicago in 9 days).

Hope this helps!!

Yes, the Brazil set seems like the best bet so far except I'm going to wait until I have more info on the extras before I buy. For example, it is not clear whether the 57 min documentary available on the UK disc is on that set.

The Brazil order may be the way to go, but we don't have enough info:

- is it Region 0?
- is the transfer/sound good?
- are there English subtitles?
- do the extras have English subtitles?

I got the uk release and the transfer is great. The documentary is also worth a watch. Unfortunately I can't comment on the R3 release.

I wouldn't mind it being delayed if it's to make a better disc. I'd rather have a packed disc in February than a barebones in December...

I would too, but there's really no reason why a Special Edition of this DVD couldn't have been released by December, nevermind that it should have been released already.

OSCAR CONSIDERATION.

Harvey was very vocal about this film when it opened earlier this year. He was expecting a huge hit. The film (money wise) fell below his expectations.

I'm sure he'll try to pump it up again for the Oscar season with rereleases and assorted CITY OF GOD goodness.

I wouldn't expect a DVD until late winter.

This is the one time I will have to agree with Harvey (did I just say that?) and don't mind him pushing the film for Oscar consideration.

This film is that damn good.

Didn't see that... no need to be snippy.

Still doesn't answer my other questions - which will make or break the deal.

I am not being snippy...simply answered your question....

Furthermore you will have to wait until the release date gets closer for a review...at this point your questions can not be answered as the product is not yet on the market. With that said...from what has been provided so far as information one would assume that the Brazilian version might, MIGHT, turn out to be the best one. So, lets all wait and see what happens.

Leave it to the House of Mouse to yank us around like this again.... On the rare occassion, they change their mind and eventually release some of their cancelled titles...

Well, this cancellation/delay for the R1 got me to order the new British R2-pal version of "City of God" from Bensonsworld.co.uk, which just got released.
I've dealt with them before for a few orders, and they've always been good. Shipping to the U.S. is only 50p per disc.

And, since I was placing that order, it was a good opportunity to get the cool U.K. version of "Ed Wood", and "The Brave", another Johnny Depp film not available on DVD over here.

Once again, I can feel good about having bought the all-region player.

Umm, I think you have your dates mixed up or something because City of God's time for an Oscar has passed. It recieved no nominations for this years Academy Awards, March 23rd. It would not qualify for next years award.

City of God was eligable for last years Best Foreign Picture category.

This year it's eligable for Best Picture.

When someone gets the UK zone 2, could you let us know if the subtitles are forced or if they can be removed.

I looked at the Brazil edition, and though it looks good, they really really have to reconsider the shipping options. Way too expensive. I'll go with the zone 2 if the subs are removable. Otherwise, i'm not sure.... I guess I'll wait.
