For Seven Samurai look to see if its Region free. If it is and it has the restoration documentary its the rare first printing. The second version is region 1 and has the restoration documentary removed.

Don't know about BTTF.

Well, if you traded for Seven Samurai through DVDTalk and didn't offer up your first child in exchange, you don't have a first print. The restoration doc on Seven Samurai had to be removed due to a rights issue. If it's not listed in the features, yours isn't a first print.

The restoration documentary isn't a commentary, its a short section devoted to showing how the film was restored. A few other Criterion have it though the names elude me. All it does is show you before and after screen snips. I don't have the Seven Samurai one, but I'm sure its the same thing.

As far as BTTF, the second pressing should have a V2 on the inner ring which is the pressing that fixed the framing problem that BTTF 2 & 3 had. You had to send off for the replacement disks, so i'd think it would be unlikely that you found a used copy with the second pressing. For the second pressing someone obviously would have had to go through alot of trouble to get the correct one and therefore unlikely that they would get rid of it once fixed.

Hope this helps.
