I got the dvd the other day... Kinda mad about the lack of extra's, I wish Criterion could have got the rights to this like they did Ratcatcher. I haven't checked the dvd on my HT setup, I hope the 5.1 track isnt' screwy... There's some awesome music in this film.
I saw this in the theater last year and it was in my top ten films of the year... Might not be for everyone, but it's a great film nevertheless.

MrE, I'm puzzled by that as well. I watched Morvern Callar the other night and found it to be no more than average. Its only saving grace is Samantha Morton's performance (not to mention her body
).

with all the imbecile films we have discussed on this forum ... what's wrong with Morvern Callar?
as for the reviews, dear Hendrik, online reviews are just ridiculous, if these guys were good enough as critics they were writing on some important - printed - film magazine.

Morvern Collar is a gender swapped L'Aventura. It at first seems to be about one thing (dead boyfriend) but the character soon sets out on a journey that slowly becomes less and less focused and the boyfriend becomes more and more forgotten. Morvern soon finds herself on Spring Break in Marienbad and the film is filled with often vacuous, frequently mysterious, always isolated characters and locations. If you like L'Aventura you'll like this. If you don't "get" these kind of films than you definately won't like Ramsey's (or Antonioni's) film
P.S. I hope this honest, "one man's opinion" has been more helpful than a bunch of grunts and links to obscure web critics with little to no credentials.

Ooh, good call Pants. I like the reference.
Morvern Callar is a fine film. It's been a while since I've seen it (mayhaps I will see it again), but what struck me was the rhythm of it. I thought it was an exquisite little film-song, complete with a winning soundtrack.
And I know no one pays attention to my ramblings so I'm not worried if my blurb is helpful or not . . .

I was jonesin' to buy something last night and ended up finding a copy in the mall last night, but the disc had popped off the hub and was bouncing around in the case. Bah!
Oh well, I just ordered it from DDD this morning. I've got enough to watch in the meantime.

This dvd needed subtitles, otherwise it was a good character study.

Got this from Netflix yesterday and am watching it right now....about a half an hour in and it's very reminiscent of Ratcatcher.....like it so far, but the lack of subtitles and uneven sound are frustrating.....boo to Lions Gate on this one.....The dialog is almost inaudible, and then the soundtrack will kick in and three times the volume....there's no excuse for that.....

I just finished watching it and didn't really have any problems hearing or understanding the dialog... Really enjoyed the movie overall and love the soundtrack (will have to see if there's an official release available). Some of her, uh, encounters in Spain make me want to do some travelling!

Pants' post eariler in this thread now has me interested in seeing L'Aventura sometime.

I just watched this. Well most of it. I was kinda drifting in and out. Damn comfy couch.
Can anyone tell me what scene features the song "Some Velvet Morning" by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra?
It was in the trailer and the end credits of the film, but I think I was asleep for the minute or two it played and I'm not sure if I want to play the whole movie again.

As long as everyone is giving their two cents worth...
I found the film to be a bit on the slow and tedious side, but one that provided interesting reflection for a few days after it had ended and felt that the end of the film respresented a high point in the character's life so far with at least more intersesting if not even better things to come. I did suffer a bit from the comfy couch syndrome, but pausing it for a cat nap took care of it.
I'm always in favor of female nudity in films, but I found Ms. Morton to be plain - not at all ugly, but just an average normal nekkid girl with good angles and bad angles. Very "real" and not gratuitous at all.
The 5.1 soundtrack was not particularly memorable - I noticed no sync problems, nor any major differences in levels from one scene to the next, really nothing outstanding either good or bad. I do use an excellent sound-system (aragon palladium II monoblocks across the front 3 channels and the rest of the system is balanced accordingly) if that is an indicator of my ability to evaluate the audio.
