Simply not possible. The masters for the show have gone untouched for a number of years. A couple small VHS companies back in the day (including the now defunct New World Video) were the last ones to get the licensing from Alan (he owns the show), and that was over ten years ago.
According to his site, he is now working on the resoration and putting together of the set, and has been for over a year now. No other company has had access to the materials necessary to make a proper box set.
The only thing I can think of is if a syndicator who purchased the syndication rights to the series when it became available in 1989, decided to sell their syndicated copies to a DVD company.
In that case, Alan would have no involvement, and of course, the DVDs would have no real extras (at least none that Alan had any hand in).
This is just a guess on my part, but like I said, according to Alan's website, there are no legal DVD versions of the show available anywhere yet.

Looks like it is the syndicate option. Judging by the photos used on that website, it is a transfer from the inferior video company from about ten years ago. (same photos were used on the VHS boxes).
I would be shocked if the quality was anything above subpar. Keep in mind that Alan had no involvement in this japanese set. The one that he is personally working on (resoration, estras, etc) is R1 only, and coming out in July.
July 27th might seem like an eternity, but it will certainly be worth the wait!

I've had two Holy Grails of TV shows on DVD.
SledgeHammer was one.
Once both seasons are released, there will be only one Holy Grail left. And I think most of you can agree with me on this.
Police Squad! In Color!

Completely agree on PS. Didn't have the patience to wait for PS, though, and had to pull a Star Wars and pick up a boot. It existed on VHS (all six episodes), so keep our fingers crossed.
Hopefully one day, it will be officially released. We shall see!
