DVDs and a hurricane...
Scenario-A class 5 hurricane is heading straight for you. You do all that you can to board up the windows in your house etc., however, you have very tall trees outside all around. They are also extremely thin. The trees are already starting to bend over due to local weather. Now, your DVD collection is your pride and joy and you do not want it to be damaged in any way. What would you do?
I know I'm being paranoid here, but I want to make sure my DVDs are as safe as possible from falling trees and/or a devistated house. My house is on homeowners insurance (plus I'm renting), but my DVDs aren't. This is all probably just precautionary, however you never know what could happen. Any suggestions?

As I stated in another thread I'm thinking about putting a good number of my TV show DVDs into CD binders. Those fold out cases are such a pain to take out and put away properly when in a hurry.
I guess if you felt like spending the cash you could put everything in CD cases and then you could move them faster.
Just an idea.

I was thinking he could put the DVDs on a few CD-R spindles and toss 'em in the back of the car. He risks loosing the cardboard parts of the cases, but not the DVDs.

I just moved a few weeks ago and put all 350+ dvd's in one giant monitor box and it was HEAVY!! If I had to go in a hurry there is no way I would have time to save my poor defenseless dvd's.

Why aren't your DVDs on your renters insurance (or do you not have any, and you're just relying on the home owner's insurance)?
I'd say get your stuff insured, so that if there's a fire or hurricane or whatever you worry about important stuff (getting yourself and any other living beings in the house to safety) and not trivial stuff (possessions).

Renter's Insurance. I got mine through AllState. For under $20 a month I was covering $25,000 worth of stuff and it is portable as you move. It should be able to be set up quickly. Go today.

I was thinking about the same situation when Henri was headed towards Tampa. We have renters insurance, and I know it will cover replacement costs, but I have a lot of out of print and hard to find books as well as my DVDs and collectables. My husband and I were looking at a large fire proof safe to put things in in that kind of situation, but it was too heavy for our second floor apartment. It might be something for you to consider, though.

We live in FL and had to evacuate in 1999. We filled both cars with photo albums, important papers, DVDs (I didn't have as many then), CDs, and guitars. If we had to evacuate again, I'd only take the DVDs and CDs that are OOP or absolute faves that I may want to have during the evacuation situation.

That is what I took from my home: CDs, DVDs, photo albums, important papers which we have in a fireproof safe, and my husband's guitars.
