Never judge a DVD by its cover, it's what's inside that truly counts.

I couldn't care less about the floating heads... mostly... Though I agree it seems a bit silly and I can see why it is frustrating to some. I also understand the marketing gimmick behind it... getting J6P to pick up something he has no interest in because there are people in it that he /she is interested in... Seems like a logical way to sell and rent more product.

It doesn't really bother me, in fact sometimes I think that the "floating heads" cover is better suited as the DVD cover, rather than the original theatrical poster.

Personally, I'd rather see the theatrical poster make it to the DVD cover once in a while.
But the floating heads don't bother me all that much.
Though they seem silly and do a poor job (most times) of communicating the essence of the movie..... I'm looking only at that spine 97% of the time!!!!!!

Floating heads bother me. But what bothers me more are the covers that have 5 or 6 young stars standing in a triangle of sorts facing the camera at different angles (see Final Destination 2).

Really ugly covers in the end don't really effect my purchase. I'd be lying if I said they totally don't, but if I see two movies I want about equal, and one has a really nice cover/package I'll probably go for that one. I do avoid the bilingual covers though, since the spines are so ugly.

If DVDs are costing you $20, there's a lot more than a cover you should be upset about...

Nope, I don't really give it a second thought, but have no issue with whatever irks the next person. We have our own personal quirks...I sure have plenty, but this happens to not be one of them.

I think we all should just stop arguing over floating heads and focus on other important things on dvds like inserts.

Cornelius1047, ahh, I wasn't upset about covers,

no clue what dvds cost in the states, sorta guessing. I can't beleave people would even want to talk about cover art. it's silly to me. besides it's the back cover that I read when I'm at a video store not the front cover. is there any extras other then a trailer, like thats a extra. is it in widescreen....

There is nothing artistic about a damn actor's big head on the front of the DVD cover. And that's why it's so much easier to make and mass-market.

right. I just want the dvd to have a long and healthy shelf life.....free of technical errors. I'd be happy with just that. I dont complain about price, big-heads, double or triple dipping, bare bones discs, missing inserts.....none of it. I do whine about getting less than 10 dvds a week. it's just not right!!

another person may be concerned about whatever....thats o.k. because it does matter to them. stand up for what you feel is proper. I just save my concern for issues I feel are much more important....like qaulity control with the disc itself.

I generally don't mind, but when the heads are friggin HUGE like Gang's of New York's, I'll get a bit annoyed.

Don't bother me much but I do think that the Cast Away cover was a bit too much. Talk about extreme close up....

The cover art of a DVD has never made be blind-buy something, but it also has never made me not buy the film I wanted to get in the first place.

So I guess, while some of the covers can be ugly, it means little to me in the long run.

While a lot of us know actors by their names, a lot of people don't know who's who in the world of cinema, and only recognize faces. So I guess floating head covers are useful..... for some people.

But I doubt that's the reason that studios do it that way.... probably more for artistic laziness and deference to the actors.

Personally, I like the more artistic covers, but unless it looks absolutely horrible, it doesn't bother me.

It's not a big deal, but it's still disappointing when a movie, like the new Ocean's 11, has really cool poster art and then they replace it with really crappy photos of actors' heads for the video.

Ugly covers are offensive.

I do like Wes' eyes on 'Soul Survivor' cover. There wasn't enough of him in the movie. Covers, for the most part are missleading. A person could be an extra when the movie is made, get some fame, then they get a big head on the cover of the movie when the studio reissues it. One moment a cover has a Preditor onthe cover, the next its Danny Glover. One moment there is a valcano, the next Pierce B.

While it's certainly not a make or break point for me, it is frustrating that beautiful poster art is changed for cheesy heads on the cover or that there's a lack of originality in DVD packaging, with few exceptions. Studio cover artists can learn much from packaging like Fight Club or Fear and Loathing, or even the Lord of the Rings Extended edition. They capture the mood of the film perfectly without the ominous heads.
