New Animal House Release

I read the following post on another website:

Animal House: Can't Skip Trailers?

Just watched the new Double Secret Probation edition of Animal House. I was dismayed to find that I had to sit through 5 minutes of trailers and shameless self-promotion for Universal before I could even watch the damn movie!

I tried the menu buttons on the DVD, but I got the "locked out" icon on the screen. While I was getting good and frustrated, I found that at least Fast Forward works, but this is simply inexcusable.

If I had known that they had put 5 minutes of advertising on the disc that there's no way around, I wouldn't have bought this.

Am I just being stupid, or is there really no way to skip all this promotional crap on this disc?
Anyone have more information on this? I was going to buy this tonight but now I may have to skip it. I cannot believe the depths of stupidity movie studios can sink to.

Usually, you can skip past this using the ">|" (next chapter) button, if the "menu" function is locked...

Its DVD release information for Scarface, Weird Science, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, and Monty Python: meaning of Life.

I think you can skip it, but since I enjoyed those movies, it didn't bother me much.

Also they took the time and effort to record new material for this release, but couldn't even include a damn 1 page insert with chapter stops. Silliness.

I tried skipping chapters too, but it didn't work. YMMV. I just hit 200x FF on my DVD player to skip them in about two seconds.

This really pisses me off. Now I know why it was so cheap. But in any case, I'm glad to finally have it.

I read elsewhere that the movie looked so good the director disliked it saying it wasn't meant to look that good and made them rework it so it looked worse.

Chapter skip button should solve that problem.

Steelcurtain just wrote that that doesn't work either. I'd like to hear from a few other people to see if it might be a player compatability problem (I know I'm being optimistic there), because I absolutely refuse to buy a DVD that has five minutes worth of forced advertising on it.

Sure the trailers are fun the first time you see them, but do you really want to sit through them every time you put the disc in the player?

I tried Chapter Skip and Menu and neither worked. I have a Samsung, can't remember which model.

It bugged me that studios do this, but for the price I paid, I'm not complaining. I also got a $5 coupon for the High School Reunion box set; it's worth it for me to sit through the previews now.

FWIW, my DVD player is the JVC seven-disc changer with prog. scan, although the model number eludes me right now. From what I can tell, it doesn't seem to be a compatibility issue...

JVC XV-S502.
Also unable to skip shameless promotions; I bump up forward scan as fast as it will go.

Wow, didn't realize this was such a big deal...I have no problem skipping them by pushing the forward button.

Either way, whenever I watch a VHS, which is like twice a year now, I can't stand having to fast forward through the trailers. I don't think some people here remember what it used to be like 4-5 years ago.

to Universal for including the Scarface DVD teaser...everyone I watched Animal House with is dying for that one. Can't wait.

Also, it comes in a plastic case to prevent fall-apart

What are the good features / benefits of this release?

So if you put in the DVD & then go to grab something to drink, wouldn't this eliminate the problem?

This is why everyone needs a DVD burner; make your own version of the disc without all the trailers (or at least re-enable the chapter skip button).

And compress the movie down to a single layer to make it look like crap...

Forced trailers of this nature make me to refuse to buy certain DVDs. I'd rather buy a DVD without an insert.

Well, I guess that cinches it. I'm not buying this DVD.

I also encourage everyone to boycott this DVD on principle. I'm sure that this title isn't at the top of everyone's must-have list. But if we allow them to get away with this crap on this title, you know that they'll eventually start doing it to the ones that ARE on your list.

BOYCOTT THIS DVD!!!

I for one don't find this to be that big of a deal and will still be picking this up. However, I am also one who does not sulk while at the theater when they show a few advertisments and previews. I can see how some would find it annoying, much like my friend who tries to throw Junior Mints at the projectionist in hopes of getting him/her to speed through the advertisements and previews.

I hate trailers as much as the next guy, but if I really want a movie, I will go ahead and get it..

While we are on the subject of trailers on DVD's - I have to say it appears Paramount had the idea, when they released 'The Hunted'. When the DVD loads up, you see the logo and you see on the left side "Previews" and on the right side "Main Menu" - you have a choice.

That or just be like everyone else and include them in the "special features" section.
