I really like Chicago, but I'm actually happy with the release. It has a good transfer and good sound (on my system, at least, if not yours) which is the most important thing. I would've liked more extras, but they put a commentary and a full musical number deleted scene (plus that documentary which I already had) so I'm satisfied with the quality if not the abundance of those as well.

No reason for me to double-dip on this.

Provided that I do indeed have the opportunity to wear Ms. Belluci's ass for a hat, I will gladly provide the insert.

If (read 'when') the re-release 'Chicago', unless it's several years down the road (I predict 12 months or less), wouldn't they just use the same transfer as before? Haven't some other 'double-dipped' releases just used the same transfer but added tons of new features?

I'm waiting for the r2j of Chicago. 2 disc set, with the film on its own disc, and extras on another. With the reputation that r2j DVDs have I expect this release to have better A/V quality than the r1. Plus it contains a few extras the r1 doesn't have (trailers, TV spots, lyric sheets, etc.) and comes in a nifty package. It's just a few dollars difference, so it might be worth waiting a couple months for.

Yep everyone knows that this will be re-released. Studio's are greedy. I'm sure there will be an special editon, superbit, ultimate and exteme editions.

I just rented this from Hollywood Video and I'm so tired from work and minimal sleep that I can't even finish watching it. I've got about half an hour left. Hopefully I'll catch my second wind and be able to finish it before I go to bed. I didn't think I'd like it this much, but I can easily see why this was considered one of the best movies of last year. It's not even over and I friggin' love this movie. I wish I had seen it in the theatre. Would've been my first musical. Unfortunately, I never got around to it, eventhough I wanted to. I don't always agree with who gets an Oscar, but 20 minutes into this movie I absolutely understood why they gave it to Catherine Zeta-Jones. What a revelation! This is definitely a movie I'll be purchasing. Most likely previously viewed for cheap though, since I'm pretty sure they'll re-release it as a special edition. It's actually kinda obvious since it's not even called a "special widescreen edition" or "collector's series" or anything. I think that makes it a given that it'll get at least another release. I don't think it'll have more than one re-release for a while though. Maybe after a 10 year anniversary or something. Or in time for the sequel, of course.

I hope we don't have to wait 9 more years for the HD version to be released. The way things are going with the format wars, though, it could take that long.

people at dvdfile are complaining about a crappy video noise durring some of the numbers, but I'm just seeing grain, which looked natural to me. Also the dts track is amazing.

Yes, in particular, the two consecutive shots in the opening number where Roxie sees herself on stage (she just sings the word "jazz") look really grainy compared to the shots just before and after them.

I would think that was deliberate. It looked different at the theater as well.

The petition is not JUST for a rerelease, but for a substantial re-release. I mean, any movie can be re-released (Donnie Darko, anyone?), but not every movie is re-released well.

The intention of the petition was to call to the attention of the studio and the fans the extras that could have been included. For instance, the trailer for the film (a staple of even the most bare-bones DVDs) is missing. The music video for the Anastacia music video, "Love is a Crime" is missing. Not to mention, there was footage filmed of the actors at rehersal (complete rehersal tapes) as well as them recording their tracks, which all could have been included.

The other intention was to tell studios that we are dissatisfied with lackluster DVD releases, whether they are first releases or reissues. Miramax isn't exactly well known for putting out stellar releases, so I hoped this would call to someone's attention that they need to raise their standards for their releases.

What? Donnie Darko was never re-released. It merely had a price drop. The disc has been the same since when it first came out. I also don't like your tone, implying that "even a crap movie like Donnie Darko gets re-released..."
Or maybe it's meant to imply that they re-release a movie sooo many times, why not Chicago? The problem with this is, a) it's a different studio, so it's not the same (a better comparison would've been Shakespeare In Love or Good Will Hunting) and b) like I said Donnie Darko has only been released on DVD once. So far. A better comparison to a movie being re-released too much would've been Night Of The Living Dead (in the public domain) or Army Of Darkness. Or even T2 would've been better than Donnie Darko. Then again, maybe you think Donnie Darko is crap that didn't even deserve its initial release, but didn't want to diss those other movies.

Also, the point is this: They see a way to make money twice for the same movie. Maybe even more, down the road. Sometimes they'll do it right the first time, but for a movie like this, they know people will douple dip. For a movie like Gangs Of New York, they know that whoever doesn't buy the initial release most likely wouldn't shell out for another version, so they'd better do it right the first time on that. Letting the studios know we "want a re-release" of Chicago, however, is just like letting them know we want them to make X-Men 3 or Pirates Of The Caribbean 2. We know it'll happen, it's just a matter of when.
