I know that it isn't a secret that Anchor Bay has put out recall worthy product in the past. I just had to vent about the new Day of the Dead I picked up today.

It seems that certain companies release brand new discs with scratches on them. This drives me CRAZY! Maybe I am being too anal about it, but if it is brand new, shouldn't it be scratch free?

I went to Best Buy today at lunch and picked up Day of the Dead (priced matched from the Target Ad, btw). When I got the disc home, I opened it up and found that the first disc was fine (feature) but the second (bonus materials) had circular scratches all over the disc. I decided to bring it back and exchange. It seemed to play fine, but my Apex can be tempermental. So I didn't want to deal with trouble down the line.

To make a long story short, the replacement copy had a huge gouge in the second disc. This one was very deep. So I ended up driving to Plymouth Meeting, and tried a different BB. The third copy was fine on the second disc but had scratches on the first. Fortunately, the cashier let me do a mix and match with the discs, so I got decent copies of each.

I have a feeling I will get slammed for being so picky, but I can't understand how scratches happen at the factory. Do they have trained chimps putting the discs in the holder? I am really curious about the production process because certain companies always have flawless discs and others are often scratched.

You shouldn't get slammed for this. I mean you paid for it, you need to be satisfied.

Your question about how the DVD's are put into cases is something I've wondered too. Who knows? Is it by machine or by hand? One of the reasons I was wondering is when I opened my King of the Hill set, in one of the cases under the DVD was someone's chewed off fingernail clipping.

I just checked mine and no scratches/gouges. But disc one has that oil slick look.

About 60% of the 2-disc sets I have received in the last 6 months have been scratched on at least one disc. I don't know what's going on, but it seems to be widespread.

Of all the companies, Anchor Bay and Buena Vista tend to have the highest rate of scratched disks. It was very fustrating when I had to return three Near Dark sets (@ Best Buy) to get a copy that had both disks without scratches. The Best Buys in NJ always seem to give me a hard time about exchanging dvds...those BASTARDS!

I'd have to go along with this...Anchor Bay are not the only culprits...i've often received brand new discs which have still been on their hub yet scratched to hell...i've even received brand new discs with fingerprints on!

When I bought the Tenebre / Deep Red 2 dvd set, Tenebre was scratched. Shame on you AB!

The scratches on a new disc drive me crazy as well. When I buy a new product I want it in new condition..

Single DVDs are usually OK, it's the 2 disc and boxsets. Real bad, almost every one I buy is scratched.

I've run across the scratched disc thing a lot on Fox box sets. I always return them until I get a good set. Its frustrating and I can't understand how the discs get so scratched.

What I do is when I buy a dvd (especially 2 discs or more in the same package) is once I get to my car I open them and inspect them in the parking lot. If there's any scratches, I can return it right then.

Exactly what I do as well. Same with ordering through the web, I open it as soon as it arrives and inspect.
