Why are 'Special features not rated'?

This is one of those dumb questions that popped into my head when I was really bored the other day. Heck, I'm not even sure if anyone here would know. But why do all DVD's that have commentaries, documentaries, etc have a 'Special Features Not Rated' blurb on the back of the box? I even heard it mentioned on a recent radio ad. Is this some sort of legal or ratings board requirement? Does anyone really buy a movie hoping for an R-rated commentary?

they don't send them to the mpaa. And I guess they don't want to get sued over a pg or pg13 movie that has lots of lanugage in the bonus features and their kid hears it, aka the studios are just covering their ass.

The MPAA charges money to rate films. Since the special features aren't going to be seen in the theaters the studios don't worry about getting them rated. The disclaimer is just to cover their butts like Rypro said.

Like above said it's a ass covering thing. Just like the disclaimer at the begining of movies telling us the studios take no responsabilities for what's said on the commentary tracks.

Because they all have Hardcore nudity in them.

Because they would rather not send them in to the MPAA for rating.

Also, the DVDs carry a rating on the back, showing what the MPAA rated the MOVIE. In order to make certain that there is no confusion, the distributors are merely saying that the rating on the box does not apply to the supplements.
