Columbia TriStar owns the rights, but there are no rumors of a pending release. BTW, the negatives to all three films were lost in a fire many years ago, and I doubt CTHV will launch a major restoration effort.
If you can bear less-than-perfect film elements, Artificial Eye's R2 PAL release is fine (it includes several taped interviews with Satyajit Ray from the BBC program Omnibus, and an excellent "masterclass" discussion of The World of Apu). These are three of the greatest films I've ever seen, and Pather Panchali has to be one of the most remarkable debuts in film history. The availability of the R2 set (along with Artificial Eye's release of Bergman's Fanny and Alexander--5-hour cut) completely justified my purchase of an all-region player.
My advice: get a cheap CyberHome (~$50) and start enjoying.
