I would like to buy the Star Trek DVD sets, but they are too expnsive for me to buy right now.
I would rather buy newer movies on DVD first then pay $100 for decades old TV shows.
Maybe somebody can answer me these questions.
1. How much do DVD's cost to make?
2. How much does the Star Trek packaging cost to make?
3. Did Paramount have to pay anybody for rights to put these out on DVD? (such as music, actor, directors)
4. Does the estate of Lucille Ball/ Desi Arnaz get royalties from the sale of the original series on DVD or did they sign away all rights years ago?
5. What does each Star Trek set actually cost to make?
6. Why are the Star Trek (or for that matter any TV product) so expensive on DVD? Being that the studio that is putting it out on DVD already owns the rights for the show. Not including Anchor Bay or other studios putting out other studios TV product on DVD.

Probably because the studio knows that Trekkies will pay anything for it. Trek is not the type of series where there are a lot of fence-sitters. You either love it or you hate it. I don't think reducing the price $20 or so will bring a lot more buyers.

Take Fox for example, their standard MSRP for a full season of an hour-long series is sixty dollars. For series like 24, Buffy, and Angel, that means you're paying -- at retail -- about $2.50 an episode. A full season -- about seventeen hours of film -- costs about the same as two or three movies.
Other, more expensive sets would likely have extra costs, such as royalty payments to the creators and actors, or licensing fees if they're put out through a third party (like A&E).
Even Paramount's Trek pricing isn't that high. You figure that a full season of Trek -- twenty six episodes of TNG or DS9 -- goes for around $150 MSRP and works out to around $5.00 an episode. The VHS cassettes cost more than twice that.

I will be so happy to
If this happens(I'm sure it will, because this is a "Cash Cow" franchise) I will immediately have this on my "I have to have right now" list.
I also better get "The Cage"(in full color) in the Season 1 box set, and not Season 3. Paramount has it listed as Episode 99, wth? There were only 79 episodes total. can someone list here, all the names of the episodes for seasons 1 through 3. Thanks!!!! Please remix them all in Dolby 5.1.
Again, this along with the Next Generation are two of my only TV shows(except for a few...."Rocky and Bullwinkle being one of them) that I want to own.

• Quoth calhoun07 •
Didn't Martin Blythe pretty much tell us they would do this several months back when the subject came up?

Unless he's made an announcement recently (which I could have very easily missed), he vaguely denied it repeatedly, and I called him on it repeatedly (probably pissing him off ... sorry, sir
) since it was the most obvious thing ever. The mere implication that this wasn't in our near future was absurd. In fact, I give you this thread: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=262791Thankfully, I've refused to buy the current versions, awaiting this inevitable development.

I disagree with this. I love ST TOS. I grew up with it. I want it. I want it for my kids. But I will not buy at the current price. Threads like this here and elsewhere reveal many many folks like me who just won't buy the way things are now.
Put it in box sets and price it like STNG, and I'd buy all episodes now, instantly, yes, please. ST TOS would go for $300 instead of $600 if priced like STNG, and less if like many other TV shows.
So, again, I disagree that ST fans make pricing decisions easy from Paramount's perspective. I am a huge fan, and I won't buy the way things are now.

• Quoth El-Kabong •
Well, you'll be pleased to know that I've used my Special DVD Summoning Powers by ordering 6 of the current old school Star Trek discs. I expect that we should see an official announcement sometime early next week.

I'd take Voyager if they paid me $20/season set.
Naaah, I probably still wouldn't take it.

Can you imagine what the Gulf+Western executives would have said, back in 1964, if you told them that consumers would be willing to big bucks for the program almost 40 years in the future?

Wow, I must be a one-of-a-kind.
I am a fence-sitter on Star Trek. I own Star Trek: I - IV: SE on DVD, and Star Trek VI, and that's it.
I've basically been waiting for a good deal to come along before I'd consider buying TOS.
I'm very interested to see what happens with these box sets.

Paramount .....what are you doing
There are supposedly going to begin work on TOS in late 2004, early 2005. I can't wait for this!!!!! I really hope they release some extras in tat box set, maybe some new interviews with the cast and crew, but I have a couple of questions I want to see if someone can answer
1) I know that Paramount released "The Director's Edition" of The Motion Picture on DVD, but I remember there was a video tape that came out that I believe had an additional 17-20 minutes of additional footage that wasn't incuded on this addition(which made the film much better). Do you think this will get re-released with the footage?
2) Are they planning on doing these "Special Collectors/Directors Versions for TNG as well? Even "Nemesis"? I really want to see those Wesley Crusher scemes that were cut, put back into the film.
3) In "The Menagerie" Parts 1 and 2(I haven't seen it in forever, so I'm sorry) is this just one long episode(i.e. Encounter at Farpoint) or is it like a Best of Both Worlds(i.e. real 2 parter....with a "to be continued")
4) Could someone please post some menu shots of TNG (I don't care what season). I want to see what the look like? Does each episode have chapter stops?
Yhanks for ALL of your help

The DE edition of Star Trek 1 included some extra footage and some things cleaned up. I doubt you'll see a rerelease until everything has been spiffed up.
The Menagerie was the Original pilot episode "The Cage", when the pilot didn't sell the show was retooled with new people. (Majel Barrett was moved from officer to nurse because no one would believe a woman would be an officer even 200 years in the future). The footage was then used with the new series and was shown as a 2 parter

I've held off buying these because of the sheer volume and lack of space. I'm so there if they are actually released in box sets.

Actually, I believe when Wise redid TMP, one of the things he got Paramount to do was take the other versions out of production. I think the theatrical cut is available overseas, but I'm not sure.
Dare I say it?
I really shouldn't...
Oh well...
Glad I have the laserdisc of the theatrical

Evenswr: like I (and many posts have noted, here and on a galaxy of other forums) you are not one of a kind. Many people are waiting for cheaper box sets to come out for TOS.
I would like to know sales trends for the current 2-episode releases. If they are slowing down, maybe they can ramp into STNG type/priced box sets more quickly. As so many have said, I'm ready to spring when they do.
