A Question about the upcoming John Carpenter DVDs...
Sorry if this has already been asked in the past (I'm a newbie!), but are the October Universal reissues of John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness and They Live totally new transfers or are they the same ones from the old Image discs? An ex of mine owned the Image titles, so I know what they look like, so I'm hoping Uni gives them sparkling new transfers (I need to nearly complete my John Carpenter collection!).

I am on the I don't care less bit because my copy of Prince Of Darkness is anamorphic, clear and DD 5.1 Surround.
What a yarn John Carpenter wrote with rocker Alice Cooper coming up with the music. No my DVD is great until HD-DVD comes I'll stick with this one.
Donald Pleasance, Jamison Parker, Lisa Blount etc star.

I disagree with that consensus. I'm of this opinion: "we don't know yet."

EDITED: Oops! of course, this says nothing of the transfers, but the point stands. Until Universal releases the specs, we have no idea...

The consensus was that it was just a re-package, no changes.

The ones that I've purchased have all been improved, and I have no reason to expect that these will not also be...

I think MOMENTUM recorded those commentaries so I'm guessing they're exclusive to them. These were the first discs i bought when i went region free.

I'm not sure where this 'consensus' is coming from, but Universal does not have a history of simply repackaging the old 1998 Image transfers when they reissue titles.

Unrelated to the quality of the transfers, but DavisDVD is reporting that the UK commentary from They Live is not on the US disc, and he suspects the same for Prince of Darkness. Glad I imported the R2s.

Here's a case where it sucks to be us: despite the commentary track that was recorded with director John Carpenter and star Roddy Piper, Universal has apparently decided not to include it on their October release of They Live. You can confirm this by checking out the menus for this disc here. The commentary track, along with a short featurette, are available on the Momentum Pictures DVD released in the UK last year. Similarly, Momentum's UK release of Prince of Darkness has a solo commentary from Carpenter, and I fear that this track also won't be available here in the States.

Actually, I think they were produced by the German company Kinowelt. Momentum just licensed them for UK release (and they've also been licensed out elsewhere in Europe).
