I trimmed a very small amount off the sides. I would say not more than approx. 1/8" per side. I found myself trimming slightly more off the front and slightly less off the back, because some of the covers had text printed closer to the edge on the back than the front did.

I was going to take a picture of the shavings, but as I was doing this project, my 4 year old appointed herself in charge of taking the trimmings and throwing them away as we did each DVD...

I'm in a real dilemma here. I would love to convert to Thin-Paks but I would HATE having to trim the inserts. I know, it sounds stupid, but I can't help it. Plus anything in a snapper would have to have a new cover printed, unless I wanted to cut the front flap off, and that I won't do! Well, I suppose I could handle cutting inserts for some of my dvds, that would still shrink the shelf space significantly.

This is my current set-up:

I know, I know, I have 5 areas that I could utilize, but I like my display section, and the stuff on the other shelves has nowhere else to go anyway.

Welcome to the addiction...

I finally just purchased a rack that will get me started. A few pay days and I'll get a second rack just like this one. This should hold me off for a while...

I like it...

Andrea, I'm doing EXACTLY the same thing. 1/8th of an inch off the back, a hair more than that on the front does the trick. It's not really that bad.

Oh, I haven't had to trim an insert yet.

Dang, that picture of the thin packs vs. keep cases is pretty pursuasive... I'd do it, but I can't cut straight. Would be nice, though... My ~550 titles take up quite a lot of room. I have a rack that holds 270 that, if I converted, would probably fit almost everything...

Get a razor blade and a straight object.

Just take all of your inserts to Kinkos and use their paper cutter. I have one at work, and my mom has one at work that I can use. I wouldn't trust myself with scissors or a Xacto blade. You have about the same amount of DVDs that I have.

IMO that's aking for trouble, it'd be real easy to have them all stolen, 200 DVDs in their cases are almost impossible to hide.

I agree with sracer to some degree - try and rid your collection of some of those ??? DVDs. Prior to this storage issue, I never entertained the thought of selling a DVD, now I've sold over 170. I'm a bit more selective, but I still will have an impulse buy here and there.

I'm on the verge of buying one of those paper cutter wheels used for crafts. It'll make trimming a lot easier and straighter. (though, I've been doing a pretty darn good job with a good pair of sharp scissors. )

Umm, you're gonna let the wifey stop you from collecting DVDs? Screw that, divorce now. You work, you pay bills. You have the right to your hobbies. She can get over it. And just start putting them in your bedroom.

I keep mine in a closet that I don't use, and I store my DVDs in boxes that I get from the photo lab that I use to work at . The boxes are shipping boxes from Kodak so they are sturdy, when Kodak ships paper they stack five high and a roll of paper is about 40lbs, and a fifty inch box will hold 55 dvd's and a 20 inch box will hold about 10 box sets. I have the large boxes on end and the 20 inch boxes go across them. The dvd cases fit perfect and the boxes are free. I have 400 dvd's

Seems like there are a lot of us with similar storage problems! I have to use Binders. There is just no room left anywhere to even put shelves or storage units. I converted a bonus room over the garage to a home theater. Its 18 by 25 and with my big screen, 7.1 surround speakers setup, furniture and a lot of wall frame posters and popcorn machine, there is just no more room!!! Binders is my only option. I have a storage area off of this bonus room, but it is subjected to summer and winter attic temperatures as this area has outside soffit vents and is also open along the roof line to the attic above. This would be a perfect storage area for all my DVD`s but it would be very expensive and too big of a project Im sure to convert this to a liveable room that stays the same temp as the rest of the house. The DVDs would be subject to too much of an extreme otherwise if I did put them in there. In the winter this storage room gets below freezing and the summer it gets in the 100`s + just like most attics! Ive got the space, its just too costly and time consuming to convert it though, so Im stuck with the Binders.

I'd love to convert to thin packs, but what I'm going to do is clean out my closet and line the wall with shelves. I guess I'll have to just push the clothes aside to look for a movie.

I never though when I started buying DVDs that I'd someday have too many to fit on my shelves.

All these people showing their newly acquired racks is tantamount to cruelty. I HAVE NO SPACE LEFT FOR SUCH! This is like showing a paraplegic new running shoes.

How about downloading adapted art from DVDCoverArt or design/adapt your own using their superb ThinPak templates
