My collection is outgrowing the space available
 

Has anybody reached this stage yet?

My ever-growing collection is reaching the limits of available shelf space. My wife has lost patience with my gradual take-over of the living room, so I have permission for just one more expansion of shelf area and it's all over. My collecting days will be no more.

Bar selling off my precious babies or moving to a bigger house (both impossible solutions) what is the solution to this dilemma?

Seriously, if space is that bad, you could take all the discs out of the boxes, put them into CD binders, and put the cases into storage.

Shelving high up on the wall just below the ceiling (there's one guy on here that's done that)

One of those carosel holders (500 cases in a few sq feet of floor space)


I'm currently using half-height bookcases from Wal-Mart, but I'm planning on building something more space effecient and better looking.

Two choices: Expand your space somehow or start to prune out DVDs. If you really have a lot of movies, you would probably be able to find some that you will never end up watching again...

Was curious, if by your "babies" you meant your DVD's or your actual kids so you can take over their rooms? :)

Tell me about it.....i've now got loads of DVD's occupying storage boxes...i keep promising myself to buy another storage system but hell!...i only end up increasing the problem by buying more DVD's instead of investing in a solution.

LOL i know this situation! .."but with the money spent on storage system i can buy even more DVD's!" - endless battle against better judgement.

I was supposed to buy Boltz-media rack but ended up buying 50% cheaper shelfs with see-thru-doors (justifed it so that i can buy two those for the price of one Boltz-rack).

I'd be happy to store them in my apartment, and wouldn't even charge you for the service ....-wink-

I ran out of space years ago. Only have room to have out about 100 or so.

So, I just keep out the ones I want to see or watch often and have the rest in boxes.

I will soon share your problem but I already have a solution planned. I'm gonna buy enough CD binders to empty 2 shelves and put alot of my older movies in them, mostly snappers by the way.

Right... throw your wife out, get a smaller bed and turn your bed room into a DVD vault.

Well, I have a multipart solution....

First part: Get over the need to have your entire collection within public view. Having shelves and shelves of DVDs lining the walls of your living room makes it look like you're living in a Blockbuster warehouse.
I only keep about 70 discs in the 2 small tower units in our living room. The rest of the collection is elsewhere. Rubbermaid makes some great stackable clear DVD storage bins. I use these bins in addition to a nice enclosed cabinet that holds 300 discs.

Second part: Be selective. Make a list of films that are important to your collection and stick to it. Don't be swayed by low prices on titles that you ordinarily wouldn't be interested in.

Third part: prune. See if there are any discs that were purchased on impulse, or blind buys that didn't work out. Sell 'em off... or give 'em away.

Fourth part: Convert to thinpak keepcases. I just started converting my discs to them. 1/2 the thickness. I've started with my used disc purchases, and then I'll figure something out after that.

NOTE: Do NOT, under any circumstances get those CD binders! They will scratch up the discs over time.

I have that rack for my CDs! It is smaller of course, as it was made for CDs. You may be able to find those at Ikea... that is where I got mine. I don't know if they have bigger ones for DVDs there, but those look exactly the same as what I have.

That is actually a great idea! Do you know of anywhere to get them in bulk and cheap? I suppose I could try the computer fair next month.

I found a site that sells these for $0.34 for a minimum of 65 cases. $0.29 if you get 130 or more. (It would cost me about 188.50 to upgrade my collection completely)

*sigh* I have a dedicated room for my video games / computers / movies. At this point, one entire wall is taken up with three DVD shelfs. I still have awhile before the third is taken up.

This is my target solution at this point. My DVDs have started growing out from the walls because my shelf space has been exhausted, so now they line the floor. No only that, with a good-sized collection just sitting out in the open, I've been getting worried about how easily they could be stolen; probably the first thing theives would go for because they're so easy to convert to cash and hard to track. I'd like to start getting them all in plastic containers and out of site.

I ordered a box of 65 just to see how well they work... and they're working very nicely so far. ;)

About two years ago I bit the bullet and ordered two cabinets from Can-Am ( a 2-drawer and a 3 drawer). The best money I have ever spent and I never regretted it. Now I can keep my discs locked up safely (keeps the kids out) and can quickly locate titles to watch or 'thin the herd'. It's not cheap, but neither is filling up your house with miscellaneous storage systems that start appearing all over your house.

I recently filled the top shelf of a book case, that used to be books, which was slowly taken over ( you have to have your priorities straight), I am thinking about stacking them directly on top of each other (the shelf is about 2 DVD's high but is too tight to allow for another shelf, but this would be a huge pain, I am cheap so buying anything else to store them with DVD earmarked money is not an option

how is this a problem? just put some dvds in a box or something. got a closet?

if you HAVE TO be able to see all your dvds in a nice little row on your wall, then you have other more serious problems you should attend to first.

If it's really a problem, I would gladly store them at my house. You can email me for the address to sent them.;)

What I did was start storing them in my closet. I found shelves that are low to the ground (they're made for shoe storage), and use bookends to keep them propped up when needed. But I guess that would only work depending on the type of closet.

That rotating dvd tower looks nice....but it says it holds only 440 dvd's. I'm assuming that is referring to all single disc ones... With my box sets and double discs that would probably hold about 380 or so of my dvd's....I need something that holds all of them. Does anyone know of a rotating shelf that holds about 500 dvd's? That would tide me over for a little bit as I want to move everything from single shelves to one rotating shelf.

The one I linked to is the biggest I've been able to find. I have about 450 DVDs on mine.

On another note, do you guys really like digging through storage bins or going to the closet to find a movie you want to watch?

A thread to rant on. My TV stand has a shelf inside that looked perfect for storing DVDs on and under at the bottom of the cabinet. When I ran out of shelf space to my dismay the DVDs can't quite fit on the bottom because they are 1/2 inch to tall to fit. The only way to put them in is to lay them sideways on top of each other, which I do not want to do.

So I have been thinning my books to make room on the bookshelves for the DVDs while I have all this empty space in the cabinet. :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:
