When you HAVE to keep more than 1 version of a dvd thread.

(Not counting dvds that have more than 1 version within the same packaging)

So far I own 2 versions of these titles:

The Evil Dead (Elite Special Edition, Book of the dead SE)
Manhunter (2 disc Limited Edition, New Remastered dir. cut)
Silence of the lambs (criterion, mgm SE)

Evil Dead because the elite is in the original aspect ratio.

Manhunter because the new edition doesn't have the docus.

Silence because the new version doesn't have the commentary and serial killer profiles.

And how 'bout you?

I've thought about re-buying the original cut of The Professional and making a sort-of 2 disc set..

Sid & Nancy CC and the MGM for the anamorphic transfer. Apocalypse Now Redux and the original cut. I think that's about it... Although, I'll probably pick up Dances With Wolves from Columbia House with my next enrollment for the extended cut and extras to pair with the Image DTS version.

One title on the horizon that is sure to be a double dip and hold for many will be the Lawrence Of Arabia Superbit, for the new transfer, to pair with the LE for the extras.

Dances With Wolves: Theatrical cut
Dances With Wolves: Extended cut

the only time I've ever double dipped (although technically I don't think it's double dipping since they are two versions of the film)

Most of them I give up the old copy when I "upgrade" those that I have multiple copies of include:

Hard Boiled (Criterion & Woo2pack)- for the different commentaries
Dances w/ Wolves - I may still give up the old 2 DVD one
LotR: FotR - I'll probably do it w/ the other two as well

Several Jackie Chan/HK movies in different regions - mostly for the commentaries on the HKL DVDs
Miracles (R2/R0)
Operation Condor[Armor of the gods2] (R1/R0)
Who Am I? (R1/R0)
Police Story 1&2 (R2/R0)
Police Story 3 [Supercop] (R1/R0)
Gorgeous (R1/R0)
Hitman (R2/R0)Purple Storm (R2/R0)
2000AD (R2/R0)

Ditto for me as well. Depending on what benefits there are with the Superbit I may still do so. If that is something that is a substantial improvement over the current one then I probably won't.

Having the theatrical cut and an extended cut is really not double dipping, the movie itself is different. So far I have not bought a movie again for a better transfer, soundtrack or extras.

Army Of Darkness Limited Edition Director's Cut and Boomstick.

I don't really HAVE to keep both I guess, since the LE is the same disc as the DC in Boomstick, but the LE has better cover art and a gold keep case. That and I paid $40 for it, so it's not something I'm anxious to get rid of.

I've even thought about buying that Region 4 disc with a much better looking transfer for the DC.

I also have X-Men and X-Men 1.5, although I don't need to have both I guess. I just haven't bothered to get rid of the original yet.

The ones I have are:
Apollo 13 (DTS on one, and commentary on the other)
SOTL (commentary on Criterion, better quality on other)
Apocalpyse Now (Redux/regular)
LOTR (extended/regular)

I think that's it.

Silence Of The Lambs (MGM & Criterion)

For the reasons mentioned above.

Das Boot (Directors Cut & Superbit)

The original release for the Wolfgang Peterson Commentary etc..and the 'Superbit' for the DTS and improved video quality.

Straw Dogs (Criterion & UK Fremantle release)

The Criterion for improved video presentation and 80min Peckinpah documentary and the Fremantle release for worthwhile extras not present in the Criterion version.

Audition (Ventura & German REM release)

Ventura for the extras and the REM R2 version for the anamorphic transfer and improved video quality.

Silence of the Lambs (Criterion & MGM)
This is Spinal Tap (Criterion & MGM)

Planning on getting rid of the extra:
Terminator: Judgement Day (Ultimate & Extreme -ohbrank- Ed.s)
X-Men (reg. & 1.5)
Magnificent Butcher (Fox & Star)
Black Hawk Down (reg. & deluxe) - My "friend" lent the reg. ver. (that i lent him) to his cousin, who still hasn't returned the DVD! It's probably a lost cause now...

At least you didn't loan the three disc SE, eh?

I guess your "friend" has to visit Blockbuster more often now, right?

I have both versions of "The Exorcist" and "Apocalypse Now", because while there are things I like about the new director's cuts, I still prefer the original theatrical releases. Also there's the great "Fear of God" doc on the first Exorcist disc.

I also have the Criterion and MGM SOTL, Elite and BotD editions of "Evil Dead", etc

I don't think this counts, but I also have the DD and DTS versions of "Jurassic Park" and "Lost World". The latter were a gift, and I figured I might as well hold onto both versions. I like the DTS, but I also like all of the extra junk on the DD release. The first JP is one of my favorite movies, so I'm ok with owning it in a couple of different versions. (Still have the laserdisc too!)

I have LOTR: FOTR Extended and Theatrical but it doesn't really count

I have both version of There's Something About Mary....I wasn't going to get the new one till after I had a widescreen TV but I got it to get in on the Suncoast deal.

I had both versions of Black Hawk Down. I gave my sister the original version.

Some I've been tempted to upgrade but see no need:
Silence of the Lambs - I'll always keep the Criterion but the MGM is anamorphic (again, no widescreen TV)

Gremlins - My version looks good enough on my equipment

T2 - No advantage to me right now

I will upgrade Christmas Vacation, Office Space(If an SE comes out)

You're absolutely correct. I plan on FINALLY getting a 16x9 tv, and this will be the first Superbit I buy. But I love the LE, and see no reason to ditch it when the extras are so nice.

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (regular and uncut)

These are both two different movies in tone and form.

I bought both versions of LOTR because I wanted to have both the theatrical version and the extended version.

Off topic, but there's no way I would give my Star Wars letterboxed laserdiscs...even though I plan to buy the "Special Editions" on DVD (the laserdiscs are probably the only really good looking copies of the originals fans will ever see).
