Okay - it's 2004 now. Has there been any updates for when this set is going to be released? Any specs?
|
One quick note:
The Compleat Tex Avery laserdisc set is NOT completely uncut. Good Deed Droopy has a significant cut in it after Spike rescues the old man's top hat. There are two other scenes that remain intact on the laserdisc. I have only ever seen that cartoon uncut in Georgia back in 1981 - it is ALWAYS cut on TV now. On another note, I am Black and I want these cartoons UNCUT. Period. My father and I watched Uncle Tom's Cabana (another one you won't see on TV) on that laserdisc set and we both laughed because the stereotypes are so extreme as to be ridiculous caricatures. I agree with another poster's comment about rap music videos nowadays. Those people are just buffoons, and that upsets me. |

Just an observation on this subject, maybe I missed it, but does anyone have the tin collections of the WALT DISNEY TREASURES? Leonard Maltin does brief introductions on many of the shorts which some consider to be controversial. Apparently, Disney's stand is that these are historical pieces of film work by people who lived in a different time than we do, and that it is difficult to judge history by comparing it to today's standards. I don't believe Disney is endorsing this as acceptible in this day and age, but they do believe in preserving film history and presenting said history unaltered. Except in the case of the Jessica Rabbit incident, of course.

Buttmunker...
Hate to tell you this, but that cartoon IS cut. Right after the old guy is counting out the money to Spike, the bomb explodes and both characters are in black face, plus the old man sounds like the stereotype of an old black man. This is not on the disc - after the explosion it cuts to the scene where people are pointing up and screaming at a baby (Spike) on top of a building. |
Re: very sad
Originally posted by cinemaman I am not for censorship. But if these horrible reminders of how our racist country was not-to-long-ago must be preserved, then I hope there will be sufficient introductory/warnings/historical perspective on these DVDs - not only for parents, but to protect our next generation whom I fear is reversing the civil rights clock. These racist cartoons certainly need to be viewed in a historical context, but that very thing is what makes them interesting to watch. While it should be made clear that the racial stereotypes portrayed in them are no longer acceptable (in cartoons or otherwise), I think it would be very dishonest and unfortunate if these cartoons were not made available at all, or were edited. |
The U.S. LD version of "Tom and Jerry Vol.1 box set " is also edited.
The U.S. LD version of "Saturday Night Puss" removes the maid and substitutes her with a newly animated teenage white girl. The Japanese LD version of this same cartoon is unedited. |

Philip...
From what I've been told, on the Silly Symphonies tin, the Three Little Pigs has had a reference to a Jewish brush peddler removed. I have to watch my copy to verify that. |
The first Wave of Disney Treasure WERE censored (despite claiming to be UNCUT and UNCENSORED).
Silly Symphonies: The Three Little Pigs on the set is the REVISED edition without the Jewish Pedler. However, there is a Maltin Intro that shows a snippet of the pedler scene. Mickey Mouse in Living Color: The Clock Cleaners is censored (badly) to replace Donald saying something that sounds like "***** You" (because ONE woman heard it that way in a Wal-Mart LONG ago). Disneyland USA: The original broadcast of Disneyland's Grand Opening is CUT to avoid showing the Mouseketeers (legal reasons I suppose). I think there were a few more edits here and there. There was a whole thread two years ago on the matter. The second Wave did better and to my knowledge, nothing was cut or censored. Andrew |
Yes, there are a few shorts in the Disney Treasures sets that used edited versions, but my point was that many of them were presented uncut with introductions, when they might otherwise have been edited.
The edits in the Disney Treasures sets bother me a little, but not enough to stop me buying them :) |

Warner’s have taken the scissors to the R2 sets:
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=10823 Could they be doing the same to the R1? |
I don't think this will be the case. I heard that the Tom & Jerry set will be loaded with extras (ala Looney Tunes: Golden Collection) and this R2 set is bare-boned.
|
Ultimately, this set might be fine for the three-year-olds it was clearly aimed at, but anyone with a more objective eye is going to be sorely disappointed. These classics have been mangled by censors with dubious morals, and therefore I would urge anyone who gives two hoots about these cartoons to not buy this set, which is nothing short of a disgrace and should have been canned before it even got off the drawing board. Compared to their recent Looney Tunes Gold Collection box set, it is blatantly obvious that Warner put absolutely no care or respect was into bringing Tom & Jerry to DVD. |
Like I said, I doubt it. Why? Because 2000's Greatest Chases had rascist material galore - blackface (Yankee Doodle Mouse, Jerry's Diary, and Mouse in Manhattan).
|
So what's the final word on a Tom and Jerry release?
|
This is something I found, but it sounds very, very sad! Why release another compilation when a box set is ready to be released?!
Upcoming Titles From WB Reported by: Anthony Lizarraga June 23, 2004 (08:56am) Tom and Jerry: Blast Off To Mars Although we do not have a street date, price, or any other details pertaining to the titles mentioned above, the list does come straight from Warner's website. |
I think WB should release these cartoons uncut and uncensored but with intros similar to the WDT to keep it in the proper context of the era.
I have faith in WB that they will do the right thing and give the proper treatment to the Tom and Jerry cartoons. |
