I haven't heard anything but it seems unlikely. There's already the barebones version, and I can't imagine what extras exist still or if the demand is that great.

You never know.

They could at least add a commentary track from someone interesting.....
I think that would be appreciated.

I read a DVD review a long time ago (can't find it now) and decided to wait in hopes of a special edition. I don't remember how good the picture is and if it could use a restoration or not. At the very least we could get some interesting menus but, of course, hopefully more.

I love most of the De Sica I've seen. I own the Image DVD of The Bicycle Thief (and, yeah, I know it should be translated "The Bicycle Thieves") & have watched it twice. The film elements used aren't pristine by any means (perhaps that enhances the Neorealist atmosphere), but it didn't impair my enjoyment. The DVD itself is barebones (much like the all-too-briefly in print Shoeshine--also done by Image) without any significant restoration.

De Sica was a master at showing the essential humanity among the lower classes after the war. He exerted a great influence on Olmi, Satyajit Ray, Buñuel, and the early Fellini. His films continue to be influential to this day (among directors voting in the 2002 Sight and Sound poll, The Bicycle Thief was voted the sixth greatest film of all time).

I hope Criterion can acquire the rights to this and Shoeshine one of these days, and put out the deluxe editions they deserve.
