I guess I am in the minority since I like re-releases. Studios are constantly releasing DVDs that are far better than the originals. However, once I get a DVD that I find adequate (T2 Ultimate Edition) I won't upgrade.

It only takes maybe 5 mins to list a DVD on eBay & put it in an envelope. It is also nice to have a P.O. right down the street.

I think if your buying you have to be smart about it if you can only afford one version. A perfect example for me is Gangs of New York. Since I know a pretty significant amount of deleted footage exists, I am taking the wait and see approach.

yeah, i learned to deal with it,

another thing that pisses me off is a fairly quick price drop, like in the case of Universal packaging 2 dvds for 17.99, problem is i already own half of them which i bought the first week. unless i'm dying to see or own the movie/dvd, i'll wait til a price drop.

To restate the obvious once again:

More choice > less choice.

Personally I'm amazed this seems to happen so often to you that you get upset about it. I skim through deleted scenes if they're there on about 40% of the movies I see these days and look at other extras on about 5%.

Don't just blindly buy every new release. Only buy it when it has something you want that's not in the previous release.

If a newer edition comes out of an exisiting title in my collection then i'll upgrade if i think its beneficial to my collection. Its a matter of choice, you don't have to shell out to buy a newer version plus you could always sell your older version to fund the purchase of an upgrade (I sold my single T2 disc to buy the UE)...there are exceptions though...I have T2 UE and won't be buying the Extreme 'With Knobs On' Edition.

double-dipping, price drops...whatever else...seem like pathetic reasons to hate dvds, to me. the dvd may not be manufactured properly...thats the only reason I get upset sometimes. anything else is just a choice you need to make. re-releases and price dont matter to me in the least.

personally, I like how they have lots of released on dvd. There are full screen ones if u like then... WS if u prefer... DTS versions if u have a dts-capable system... theatrical cut versions for peeps that think they are best... directors cuts/EEs for those that want more stuff put back in the movie etc etc etc. I like a lot of options... and it would really suck if every dvd just got ONE release. I mean, some peeps dont want the end all and be all version with load of extras, a leather bound dvd case, the extra cost that goes with that etc etc.. they just want the theatrical cut of a movie and thats it.... other peeps want anything and everything they can get... superbit, dts, extra, sweet case everything. The way it is now, we all get what we want (more often than not anyway)... if there was just 1 release there would be a whole lot more peeps not getting what the want. Just my opinion...

Most of us are passionate about movies and home video.

But the knowledge at this forum regarding new releases is the exception not the norm. What about people with lives and the mother picking up a DVD for the family?

I think the point of the thread is not so much across-the-board hatred for DVDs but the practices of some DVD producers.

Sure buyer beware - but knowing and liking the practices are two separate things.

I don't really like "double-dipping" so my solution is, unless it is a movie I really love, and the re-release offers something I really want, I just skip the re-release.

In the case of a movie I really like, with an average or sub-par release, I'm very happy to get a new, "better" version.

I love the choices that are available to people; the one thing I hate is the choice for people like me is often not available. While I love extras and watch just about every single one, to me the only requirement I have for a DVD is a good OAR transfer of the theatrical cut. Seems simple enough.

Many movies that were released early on DVD need a re-release to improve the picture quality. It sucks to wait for a re-release and when the SE finally comes out it is not the theatrical version. They could give us a choice and release both the theatrical and extended cut by including both versions ala seamless branching, two separate disks in the package, or selling each version separately.

Before anyone replies, "you don't have to buy it if you don't like it", I don't buy them. I’m still waiting for some of my favorites to come out that meet my two minimum requirements. I think most people agree that it is the movie that counts and it is a shame that the movie itself is not always a choice.

I still am an avid collector of dvds, but it just gets frustrating when you think you are buying the best version available when in fact you aren't. I am probably more infuriated with how deceptive some of these movie studios are. In the case of black hawk down I knew that they were going to have a deluxe edition, but not a superbit edition come out. I was just wondering if anyone here is getting a little pissed about these constant re-releases.

Another notorious dvd being re-released is American Pie 1 and 2. I don't even know how many times that has been re-released.

Do you really think the mother picking up a DVD for the family really cares about re-issues? They see a bare-bones release of a flick that costs $10-15 next to a 2 or 3 disc set for $25-30. Think she's going to read the back and say to herself "Hey, this one has a 45 minute behind the scenes documentary! The kids will just love that!"

No, she's going to pick up the cheap one and be done with it.

I have no sympathy for uneducated people. If someone complains about something like this because "they have lives", then tough. If you don't care enough about something to research it, then you have no right to complain.

As for re-releases, I'm glad the studios do them. Some of them are stupid and a waste, but most of them are worthwhile upgrades. Again, it comes down to education. Some re-issues are worth it, and some simply are not. The information is out there, all you have to do is look.

Stuff like Superbit, it's mostly a marketing gimmick. Of course they're going to release films again in Superbit, because people are silly enough to pay a premium for a bare bones disc with in most cases only a tad bit better video and audio quality.

Bottom line, if you're tired of re-releases, then DON'T BUY THEM. If you like to see better video, audio, and extras, then upgrade. But stop whining about it.

I completely agree. I waited for years to buy Fargo because I knew with such a great movie, they would have to release a SE. I finally gave in TWO months ago. I couldn't wait any longer. Now in Sept. what do you know, Fargo SE!! Bastards, the whole industry.

I dont really care for extras, All I care about is the best possible movie presentation, so the only time i repurchased a movie is when there is something that will add to the picture and sound, and it does not have to be DTS, for example i repurchased JACK RYAN collection because old ones were not anamorphic, also I repurchased the ROCK and got the criterion edition for anamorphic as well, I will not buy BHD or ARMAGEDDON since my copy of BHD is already anamorphic and the picture quality is superb and ARMAGEDDON criterion is not anamorphic anyhow. although I might repurchase BHD when it comes out SUPERBIT!

Can you please tell me which movie are you're planning on giving in and buy so that I know a SE is on the horizon.

Like most said, if a movie is 16x9, then there's no need to upgrade since I do not have the time to watch the extras. In case like LOTR, with the theater version and the extend cut, I will buy both since they are like 2 different movie to me.

Yeah, stick with VHS.

They won't screw you around with re-issues on those.
I own multiple copies of Star Wars, Blade Runner, Army of Darkness, probably others, but I'm too lazy to check.

I'm so vain, I upgrade from Snapper to Keep case in a heartbeat. I do not purchase Full unless it is OAR and 50% of the time I buy used. I want the studios to make money so that everything out on VHS will be put out on DVD in the near future.

Oh, I know it was sarcastic, just pointing out that while VHS didn't have many double dips, they did have a few.

"Planet of the Apes: Evolution. When first released, elitists thumbed their noses at it because it wasn't anamorphic"

I am far from a elitist in anything. Putting that aside anamorphic DVDs are a MUST with my setup. If they are not anamorphic I get a screen with black ALL around the widescreen image. I have yet to find a work around so I refuse to buy non-anamorphic DVDs. I really don't think that's asking too much.
