By doing that, you're assuming that the MGM transfer has simply removed the mattes, rather than also zooming in at points.
The comparison at:

shows that (like most 'open matte' transfers), Remo is also zoomed in a bit, removing side information. Cropping off the top and bottom yourself is probably a good start, but it certain doesn't replace a legitimate widescreen transfer.

It's good enough for me. Besides, the amount of the picture that is cropped is negligible, and wouldn't be really visible due to overscan. I'm too lazy to import the other region version.
