Other Pirate Movies?

So I just got back from Pirates of the Caribbean - and damn that movie rocks. And not only did it rock, it got me in a mood to buckle my swash. I know Cutthroat Island is on disc - but is there anything else? Did any of the Tyrone Power movies make it yet? Captain Blood isnt on disc, is it?

Anything else worthy of note? Feel free to point out other regions, too - if it's a small round disc, I can play it.

The Crimson Pirate with Burt Lancaster was just recently released. And it's supposedly quite a nice transfer, so snag that one, matey.

Aaargh! Argh! arh, cough...anyone got some citrus fruit?

Oh when, oh when is the 1934 version of Treasure Island coming out?

There's always Muppet Treasure Island. Tim Curry's Capt. Hook is quite, er, uh- interesting? Lol.

Scaramouche just came out, although it's not a pirate movie it IS quite a "swashbuckler".

If you ask me, they really missed the boat (no pun intended) by not releasing "Captain Blood" and "The Sea Hawk" to coincide with Pirates of the Caribbean.

Image has released the old silent Doug Fairbanks movie "Black Pirate." Good flick if you happen to like silent movies, which I do.

Arrr - I be checking out Crimson Pirate next time I be in port to get more booty.

Oh - wait, that came out wrong. So, I'll have to throw that onto my preorder list. And I guess it doesnt have to be JUST pirates - any swashbuckleing film would do, The Adventures of Robin Hood (cant wait) or The Mark of Zorro - any classic swordplay movies would fit the bill, ye swabs!

Then Scaramouche should be at the top of your list, even above the outstanding The Crimson Pirate. The Douglas Fairbanks silent double-feature on Kino, The Mark of Zorro and Don Q, Son of Zorro, is very highly recommended and has some outstanding supplements.

If you haven't seen them, The Mask of Zorro (Banderas/Hopkins) and The Count of Monte Cristo (Caveziel/Harris) are recent fantastic films that play much like the swashbucklers of yore. The special edition of the former and the only DVD of the latter even have extras devoted toward the swordplay.

Oh, and don't forget that great comedy (seriously) Zorro, the Gay Blade. It has some dandy swordplay, albeit often close-up shots with stand-ins.

Is MTI P&S? I did not know that. Last time I caught it was on ABC in HD. Looked good there.

Muppet Treasure Island is most definitely pan-and-scan on DVD. It's obvious right from the start in the opening song sequence. If you listen to the commentary track, Brian Henson talks about things that have been cropped out of the picture or before the image pans to the action. (It has since come out that he apparently was watching a widescreen presentation when commenting and wasn't happy when Disney opted to pan and scan the DVD afterward.)

Swashbuckler with Robert Shaw, Genvieve Bujold, James Earl Jones, Geoffrey Holder and others is not bad. Also has terrific musical score.

Not technically a "pirate" movie, but I absolutely loved The Goonies when I was younger. . . still do, actually!

When I was a kid, it made me want to make treasure maps and go after pirate treasure. One of the best kids' movies (that adults can enjoy too) IMHO.

I always had a soft spot for 'Pirates', the Polanski movie with Walter Matthau. It defines the term rambling, but it does have a great pirate ship, and Matthau's performance is amusing.

Arrgh! don't forget the "Video Pirates" sequence in AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOON ("Oh, I'm so scared...") and "The Crimson Permanent Assurance" in MONTY PYTHON'S MEANING OF LIFE, both coming in September.
