That's what I was wondering, because there most certainly was porn on LD. Maybe he was thinking about CED (which was pornless).

If there were albums that had only been released on 8-track that I desperately wanted....yes, I would find myself an 8-track player just to make sure I could play them.

You LD haters seem to misunderstand the point. Almost none of us say LD as a technology is better than DVD. It isn't. The fact is, there is no DVD version of many LD releases. That makes LD a worthwhile part of my HT.

I could use your exact arguments back at you about how SACD is better than CD. But that would be stupid since there's several hundred SACD titles and thousands (millions? billions?) of CD titles. SACD is better technologically, but certainly hasn't taken over in the world and having a CD player would bring much more benefit to a person at this point.

Not at all. VHS still sells on the shelf, is that outdated? LD certainly beats the pants off it. And I am not trying to deceive anyone, nor are my points incorrect, I am trying to educate with facts. So is Josh and anyone else who actually knows something about LD.

I'm sorry, but the above statement simply smacks of sour grapes.

Heck, if the DVD owner got all the back titles they ever wanted - there's goes 50 percent of the discussions. [/B]
Actually, it wouldn't. Because they aren't available on DVD. The whole point of the hated LD posts.

There are plenty of laserdiscs that are OAR, while their DVD counterpart is Pan & Scam. That option right there is reason enough to post.

I was not aware that there was a Forum rule about discussing LDs. After all the retail selling of LD players predates even VCRs as we know them.

As an example, it gets annoying when someone posts asking about Star Wars and a smartass says "I don't care when they come to DVD, I have the laserdics" Same goes for others "I don't care about the DVD, I have the laser" So what? Did we ask?

Gee, that helps and I learn so much from that.
It sounds like someone needs to get a laser disc player.

simply put.. when the topic of star wars comes around, it leads to LD's simply because that's really the closest form you can get to the original and to a disc legally, unless you want us to say

"It's on VCD"

I'm sorry.. but really.. It's not that expensive. I got my pal the following stuff for the following amount of cash:

Laser Disc Player: Pawn Shop $25.00
Star Wars 4-6 Originals: Ebay: $20.00
Indiana jones trilogy: Ebay: $15.00
Blade Runner CC: Used record store: $6.00
Trainspotting CC: Used Record store: $4.00
E.T: Used Record store: $2.00
Schindler's List: Used record store: $3.00

So really, is it to expensive to invest in this? I already owned these and you can pick them up easily at any flea market, used record store, and ebay. You just need to shop around and 90% of all the players I have seen can be easily plugged into your current home theater setup with out to much trouble. So when we bring up the LD comments in those threads, we bring them up for a reason.. if you are hard up for a good quality version of these films, knowning about the laser disc version is a good option that should be taken. simple as that.

Correction: the only LEGAL way! Not the ONLY way. Not at all!!
Actually, there was a legally licensed Lucas film VCD of it if you really wanted it.. http://www.vcdgallery.com/action/starwars_trilogy.htm but then again, that is the SE and is in P&S. so it might not really count.. but it is episodes 4-6

I'm not sure what "as we know them" means but I believe laserdiscs debuted in 1978 and VCRs in 1975. Beta was before VHS but I believe VHS also beat laserdiscs. I could be wrong.

The first LD players sold in the USA debuted in Atlanta I believe under the Magnavox banner in 1976. I don't know about your neck of the woods, but Beta VCRs that were stand alone (Not part of a TV console) started selling in Toledo in 1977.

There isn't.

I'll post anything that contributes to the conversation at hand, even if it means comparing prior releases on obsolete formats. My collecting demands more attention be paid to content rather than format.

1977 MCA’s development team, led by Ray Dakin, creates the world’s first LaserDisc™ player.

1978 The world’s first manufacturing facility for mass replication of optical discs is built by MCA. John Winslow develops the injection molding process, and Richard Wilkinson builds the photoresist mastering equipment for the new facility.

In 1975 Sony released its Betamax and JVC its VHS technology.
Unless you can find evidence to the contrary, I'll stick with what I first said. I made that first post from memory and it appears my memory is pretty good.

My story is similar. I bought my LD player in 1999 after my DVD player. I wanted to fill in my library with movies not on DVD and many of the LDs I bought in 1999 and 2000 are still not on DVD.

My player was $50 for one that auto flips and has great picture quality and most of my LDs were picked up dirt cheap. I paid about $10 each for the Jaws, ET, and Schindler's List Limited edition box sets and $15 for the whole original Star Wars triliogy. One local store was getting rid of their LDs at the time and gave me 15 LDs for free just to get them off their hands. I picked up $3 Criterions when other stores were closing them out.

It was a very inexpensive way to have some great movies.

exactly. So why is it folks get pissy when we mention that a title not on dvd, or one that might never make it to dvd.. is on LD for all to buy at their own will?

Jack, we all don't have your talent for slightly misspelling things.
