Or he could pick up used copies of the previous individual VHS releases far cheaper as people unload them in anticipation of the DVDs.

Heck, they might even be flogging them on eBay now...

Hard to say. I think the major justification for this release is to tie it in to the Sci-Fi Channel remake so that SFC and Universal can get some cross-promotion going.

A couple years back, Universal started simultaneous VHS releases of Buck and Galactica in Great Britain. BG must've far outsold Buck Rogers, as the BG releases lasted through six volumes and BR only got as far as the first two. Maybe Universal doesn't see as much interest in BR (though I'd surely buy it myself).

You're right, of course. Galactica is tied to the mini-series, and Buck doesn't have as much support. But that's one of the great things about DVDs, and that is that they're so much cheaper to manufacture than video tapes that it be profitable for a company to produce a smaller DVD run to appeal to a narrower fan base. Here's hoping Universal uses the same logic.

Priced at $120, I think Universal has read too much into "...one of the most requested TV shows for DVD release".

They priced it to rip off the rabid fans that will lemming-like pay this outrageous dollar amount for it.

I'm excited about getting the series, but the box looks like one of those plastic Halloween masks they had when I was a kid (came in a box, with a plastic costume, pretty much a walking fire hazard... ah, the memories! ).

My god that is a great box! I may have to get 2, they'd make cool ends to my DVD shelf. If only it had a working red-light.

Well, the case design is...err...different, I'll give it that. But I hope that's a removeable slipcase.

As for the price, it is a bit rich, but I've no doubt you'll be able to get it a LOT cheaper through Best Buy, or an online retailer. Never trust the MSRP.

The word the San Deigo Comic Con is that actor Richard Hatch let slip some details on the Battlestar Galactica set. Apparently, Hatch and other actors contributed to the audio commentary track on some of the episodes. In addition, Hatch says Universal "obtained approximately 20 minutes of previously unreleased scenes from the 3-hour television version of the first episode" that is going to be added back into program for the DVD release.

Sweet!

For those of you who think the Cylon Head package looks dorky, you might want to check out this from the R4 release:

And for those of you balking at the high price - it's only about 56 bucks or so. Much better than the 80+ I've seen elsewhere online.

Any ideas as to what this footage would be? The only stuff I know for sure that was cut out was all the scenes of Serina that mention the original storyline where she has a terminal cancer-like disease, along with shots of her looking sick or in pain, a conversation between the imperious leader and the chief Ovion (present in the Marvel adaptation, I think) and Glen Larson mentioned in an interview that he cut out a lot of Imperious Leader stuff (probably close-ups) because the mask didn't look right.

You don't think that perhaps Hatch really meant they added back in 20 minutes of stuff that hasn't been seen SINCE the original 3-hour version (i.e. putting back in all the stuff that was cut for syndication)?

If all this stuff really is unreleased footage, the whole "Serina dying" stuff would seem to cause some continuity errors, as she is alright in "Lost Planet of the Gods" (till she gets shot).

I think it would be great if they unearthed some Imperious Leader closeups and the original, alien-sounding voice before Larson had it re-dubbed with Pat MacNee.

mythmaker18 -- you should put spoiler tags around the end of your 3rd paragraph. There are some people that will be seeing the show for the first time (or the first time in 25 years) with this set and are unaware of what happens.

Also, your last suggestion would also cause continuity errors with the series... namely War of the Gods.

I am also anxiously awaiting this series on DVD. Yes, it's cheesy, but I loved the show when I was a kid.

As for the new series, I'm cool with changing the Starbuck character to a woman, as long as they don't mess with other aspects of the character (most importantly, constantly making time with the hottest chicks on the Galactica).

aloha

looks much better to me, just wish i didn't notice the PAL speed-up.
if Universal is going with that gimmicky Cylon cover over here, i guess i'll have to pass.
not only is that nonsense inflating the price, but i'm just too cramped for shelf space to waste it on something dopey like that.

shame...i was looking forward to this.

Wasn't aware that was a spoiler, as it was quite well-known at the time that a). Seymour did the first one on the understanding that she'd only be in the pilot, so was upset when she found the producers asked her to be in the series and had re-cut the pilot to remove her illness and b). only took on the second episode to try to restore some "dignity" to her character and only on the condition that Serina WOULD be written out then.

If I spoiled anybody, my apologies.

Well, I wasn't really suggesting they add the original Imperious Leader's voice to the FEATURE (sorry if that was implied),. I'd just to like to see it included (along with the Serina "galactica cancer" subplot) as an extra, or perhaps on a secondary audio track.

I really do hope they re-think putting five episodes (the pilot and both parts of "Lost Planet of the Gods") on that first disc and putting only three on the last one, unless they decide to put the bulk of the extras on that last disc. Four episodes of hour-long drama to a disc is enough in my opinion. I'd be afraid the compression would be too noticeable with five. I just really hope Universal know what they're doing.

If you don't like the package, couldn't you simply just throw it away and keep the discs (or hock it on ebay.com.au for an Australia fan to snap up)?

I wouldn't let packaging knock me out of buying something I want. If I hated it bad enough, I'd just create my own box design (or download a fan alternative, which I'm sure will probalby pop up online shortly after release).
