Have you seen the theatrical version on DVD? The cropped it to a 1.85:1 ratio and it looks terrible. Every single shot (EVERY. SINGLE. SHOT.) is cramped.
BG was shot for TV in the TV ratio. It was never meant to be shown in any other. Even the brief theatrical releases of certain episodes were done without the input of most of the creators... it was just a way to make some quick cash off an expensive show.

I have a widescreen TV and I have to admit I do have a bias to WS content but lets not get carried away.
Hmmm... after writing this I realize you might be joking as your post almost seems like flame bait to some of the rabid OAR people. If so, im sorry for biting.

Cool - here's the Universal press release - with bonus features listed!
So it doesnt look like the feature film (diffrent from the pilot) is anything more than a repackaging. No need to double dip there, then. I love how they list Rick Springfield as a star - when he's in the movie about 15 min. or so. . . .

Otherwise, I'll stick with the TV series box.

The long answer is that completists would want the theatrical version also because there are a few brief shots that are exclusive to that edition... plus the scene where
Spoiler:
is different in the TV edition (for obvious reasons). But that really only applies to anal, die-hard BG fans.
Plus, because Universal appears to be sticking to their "let's-make-this-look-like-a-movie-by-letterboxing" stance... there really isn't *any* reason to buy it.
Most people will just buy the TV box set and be perfectly happy with that. It'll contain the complete story... the single, theatrical disc is just an 'alternate version' of the opening episode.

The press release says 24 hour-long episodes.
I'm guessing the original 3 hour Pilot can be included on this list?
Does anyone remember how many 2 hour episodes there were?
I can think of:
Lost Planet of the Gods
Ice Station Zero? or a similar name
Welcome to Earth?
Were there anymore? Sorry I can't remember all of the episode titles...

There were a bunch of 2-parters... you're missing two of the best:
The Living Legend (with the Battlestar Pegasus) and War of the Gods.
This should answer pretty much any questions you may have:

Keep in mind that the original premier of the show might have been "3 hours" but with all the commercials cut out, it was a lot closer to 2 hours. Oh, and I remember the show being interupted by President Carter (funny that I haven't heard much about that by most "fans").
Starbuck as a woman: Get over it guys. Starbuck was not the main character-Apollo was. I liked the show for all the cheesy effects, lame plots stolen from everywhere else, and the simple fact that the critics who called it "Cattlecar Gigantica" were right more often than not (guilty pleasures are a way of life).
Remakes are different than the originals. This is part of life. Can't you enjoy each for its own merits? Sheesh!

Doh!
How can I forget The Living Legend, with the introduction of the Battlestar Pegasus, Commander Cain and Lt. Sheba (the lovely Anne Lockhart).
And War of the Gods with Count Iblis and the Ship of Lights! Argh.
And I say I'm a Battlestar Galactica fan.

Amen to that. I have an ancient VHS copy of the series cut into a movie and watching it is pretty grim. I do give them a few points for the Starbuck episode, and the upgraded Cylon fighter that popped up in one episode, but that's about it.
Btw, if you want some real pain, I found a page of photos showing the construction of those damn flying motorcycles.

Hey guys - according to dvd price search, the first couple of retailers have the BSG set up for preorders. The best sofar is 83 (best prices.com) and the worst is 95 (at DVD Empire). That gives us a range of what to expect - if we can get into the mid 70's, then it'll be all good.

Months later, Universal decided to do a theatrical release (against the wishes of many people who worked on the program).
Yes, when it played in theaters, it was likely matted to a 1.85:1 ratio... but that doesn't make it the OAR. Certainly not when the director, cinematographer, and special effects people all were making a 1.33:1 TV show. They had absolutely no clue that Universal would eventually send this to theaters and no one framed anything assuming that it would be matted.
But don't take my word for it -- watch the existing DVD of the theatrical movie and compare it to the VHS tape or other 1.33:1 source. The compositions on the DVD are cramped and look terrible. It's nearly unwatchable.
