I didn't have this problem with Die Another Day, but I've had the same trouble with several Buena Vista disks including Signs, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Treasure Planet, Spy Kids 2, and a few others.
I have a Sony 7700 DVD player, and other people with the same player have had the same trouble with the disks I mentioned. But like I said, I never had a problem with Die Another Day or any other MGM DVD.
I'm guessing it's a compatability issue between the disk and your player.
Incidently, you should always list what player you're using. That way others with your player can tell you if they have the same problem.

I watched Die Another Day on my Samsung player but it doesn't pause for layer changes and there was no pause.
I also watched it with my friend using his older Toshiba player that does pause at layer changes and there was only one pause (it surprised us though because it was near the end of the movie).
5 layer changes? Looks to me like a defective disc (or maybe an incompatibility problem with your player).
