I'm having trouble understanding if Boondock Saints is supposed to be an example of a slow movie or a fast one. If it's the former, then I can only say one thing: Tarkovsky.

A blind Buy..find a Helen Keller disc... should be blind enough for ya. :)

Seriously, Run Lola Run is always good and can be watched many many times and you see something different every time... as has been discussed already here.

Also, shockingly funny was Soroity Boys if you like that kind of stuff. Also, Croupier and Following..both excellent. I also recommend Primary Colors as well as it was great!

Preacher 06-11-03 07:04 PM

The Ray Charles Video Anthology.

All of my favorite movies are boring, American, with bad story lines and with crappy acting and writing. Well I guess i can help you.

these have made the first cut :D

in no order: amores perros, all about my mother, rabbit proof fence, dressed to kill, mulholland drive, dog soldiers, dangerous lives of altar boys, igby goes down, flirting, and...

...zero effect or cube. this has not been decided yet.

thanks.

I'm telling you, if you haven't seen it you NEED to add Jacob's Ladder to this list. I'm really surprised more people aren't recommending it.

The Devil's Backbone. You already have Donnie Darko and Dark City (two movies I would have recommended) so if you liked those, you might like The Devil's Backbone. Also, it's a little slower and weirder, but I think the BBC miniseries Gormenghast is really good.

If you are going to go for that title, don't forget to play the "Walmart lottery" ;)

BTW I just finished watching Nemesis Game and I think that fits into the types of movies you are looking for as well. I'm not sure I'm saying I recommend it though... have to think about it for awhile first ;)

One more suggestion:

An underrated Sci-fi flick: Gattaca

He's right you know.

The Exister 06-12-03 08:29 AM

Try Takeshi Kitano's Hana-Bi (US Title: Fireworks). It's in my top 5 favorites list. Especially if you liked The Limey (similar melancholy tone).

I just did some more research on this and this looks like it may have to be #5. either that or I need to get more than 5 :D . My wife is gonna kill me. This movie looks really good!

Coupier is awesome! I love this movie...is it released on DVD in region 1?

billy9215 06-12-03 10:49 AM

Check amazon.com, import Canadian Fullscreeen...

mikerodot78 06-12-03 01:17 PM

Down by Law

or anything by Jim Jarmusch

Bill Geiger 06-13-03 01:55 PM

I believe Croupier here is Full Screen...sadly. Elsewhere, which is where I plan on purchasing it, it is 16x9.

Well I just bought the Criterion as I liked Ghost Dog so if it's not good, I'm coming after you :D

billy9215 06-13-03 02:09 PM

Down by Law, only decent due to Bennini and cinematography, otherwise skip it..

I also hear the print is miserable.

Don't quote me.

Caliking 06-13-03 02:22 PM

well...mulholland dr, aores perros, dressed to kill, the devils backbone can be had for about $55 from N. American DVD so I amy be getting those for sure.

All about my mother is pretty pricey along with the third man (im getting it soon anyway) so those two are out for now.

thanks for all your help! i have wondered about 2 of the movies i am getting and the other 2 will be totally fresh to me.

thanks

billy9215 06-13-03 02:26 PM

Croupier print is not miserable..

folgersnyourcup 06-13-03 02:37 PM

At the price (about 6-7 dollars at some places) I would say Jacob's Ladder is an absolute must buy.

Mulholland Dr. is simply unbelievable. Definitely go for that. Someone mentioned "Below" earlier in this thread. I second that, it was an enjoyable film and not overly stupid in the vein of movies such as "Ghost Ship". I don't know about 100 Girls. I thought the movie was very dumb, but bought it because I'm an ENERMOUS fan of Larisa Oleynik (Alex Mack on the Nickelodeon show). She's quite possibly the most beautiful actress in the world. She was given a really stupid role though in that movie. But yeah.

On The Devil's Backbone, note that the executive producer is Agustín Almodóvar, and Pedro Almodóvar is a producer (along with a few others). And the lead actor is Eduardo Noriega, who was the lead actor in "Open Your Eyes", which you have.
