Is this dvd rot?
I rented Open Your Eyes last night, and it started pixellating so badly that it wasn't watchable. I looked for scratches, but instead there were lots of little circles all over the shiny side of the disk. It looked like it had soda or something splattered on it, but it didn't (I washed the disk and all the circles were completely flat--between the shiny part and the plastic). I took it back and got a VHS copy. Is this dvd rot or something else? I wondered if leaving a dvd in a hot car could do this, but I've never heard of that.

This wasn't scratched. It had obvious circles on the bottom--like the shiny part was damaged.

Probably not. Sounds like something on the surface of the disc instead. I've seen spots on the playing surface of brand new discs that won't wash off. Actually on the surface, so it wouldn't effect the data inside the disc. It was only one small spot -- about 1.5 mm -- and it played fine.

But would the bottom be smooth then? When the clerk and I checked the disc out, we thought the damage had to be inside, but you could be right. I just thought it was weird.

uhh....you rented a disc. rented. just because it's been looked at to see if theres a problem does not mean you'll find something. I'm sure it was abused in some form as most renters are idiots when it comes to caring for something that does not belong to them. playing it on various players will help also so you can say it's the disc....or a player. did anyone even bother to do this?

Since this is a rented disc, it's really impossible to tell what the problem is... dozens and dozens of people have handled it and lord knows what they've done. Maybe the previous renter dropped it into a pitcher of Kool Aid overnight and some of the liquid worked it's way into the layers. Maybe it had some scratches so a renter decided to be 'helpful' and buff the living hell out of the surface, so it looks smooth but now won't play.
You just can't tell, but I'd guess that it is rental abuse rather than rot.

I think abuse is probably what happened, although who knows what. I wondered if a hot car could do that, but you don't see warnings on rental dvds the way you do on tapes so I doubt it. Thanks all, for your input.
