This'll be a blind buy for me, but the pedigree is too good to ignore! Now, how about Once Upon a Time in the West?

I bought a laserdisc player earlier this year just to watch this movie in letterbox and uncut. So I am even more excited now that I can watch this movie without having to flip a laserdisc every 30 minutes. Bring it.

I pre-ordered mine several weeks ago when it was announced and couldn't be happier it's being relesaed by Warner, as they take great pride and care for important DVD releases. I used to watch the movie incessantly when HBO first aired it (1986?).
For those new to the movie, it may take several viewings to understand the structure of Leone's storytelling.

How does this compare to The Godfather??
If it's not as good as The Godfather it's awfully close. I can't imagine you'd be disappointed.Originally posted by shanester

I may be wrong but is there a part in the movie where this boy has an ice cream treat or some sort of cake and he gives it to some sleazy little girl...but it was meant for someone else??

jessecrx,
Yes, he was going to give the cupcake to his "boyfriend", but, instead of admitting to his peers he was gay, he gave it to the little piglet.
But this scene is only in the director's cut.

I'm trying to be, but I have a question.
Is this a strange, jumbled movie -- or is it more of a straight-forward epic mafia-type film?? I ask because I caught about 15 minutes of the pan-n-scanned, shortened version on AMC a few months back and it seemed to be jumping all over the place for no reason and a telephone kept ringing and ringing and ringing.... I had to turn it off.
I will add that I love all of Leone's westerns, especially OUATITW. I want to like this movie too, but what I saw on AMC has frightened me off. Thanks.

texasgator If you were frightened by this film it was perhaps because you did jump into the movie at an odd time. Originally posted by texasgator

The movie begins near the end of the story and fades to and from the past as it illustrates the history of Max, Noodles, and the other boys. The last portion of the movie comes to the conclusion as you are moved forward in time. It is similar to what was done in The Green Mile and Saving Private Ryan.
Do NOT let this deter you from a great movie. Plan the time, almost 4 hours, to watch it from the beginning.
BTW- I just love the review from reviewer mm-39 at the IMDB.

Too long, and not much of a story. There is scenes in this film, that one ask what does this have to do with the story. Good acting will go only so far, and with out a story the film dies. Do not even rent this one. 2/10

The proper long version of the film is not in the least "jumbled" if by that word you mean it doesn't make sense or it is hard to follow. Yes the narrative goes back and forth in time but the film is meticulously constructed to do just that and it is brilliant and clear in the way it all fits together.Originally posted by texasgator

You seem to be saying you saw 15 minutes of the shortened version. Warner Brothers concocted that monstrosity for the movie's first U.S. release because they thought the film was too long. They cut out more than a third of the material and put what they had left in chronological order, destroying the structure of the film and rendering it a confusing mess. It got horrible reviews and almost nobody went to see it (I did, to my regret). Then, about six months later, when they released the correct version (well, almost correct, it still had a little cut out) it got great reviews but they had already killed the title for the box office and again almost nobody saw it (I did, to my delight).
I think it is one of the greatest movies of all time. It would easily make my top 20, if not better.
And you will know why the phone is ringing.

Alright, so I guess I'll take this as a blind buy as well. I watched some of the uncut version on AMC, looked intrigueing. Hopefully I'll find a good deal.

Pumped? Indeed. Pumped till I can be pumped no more. I'm pumped dry, I am.
Well, alright, I am a little excited with the anticipation.

I look forward to this, but when will we get Once Upon A Time in the West? Seems as though it would have been a good thing to put out with this title.

It's a good movie more like those 1930's Warner Bros. gangster movies than The Godfather.
But what nobody ever mentions is the soundtrack!
Beautiful music, now that is better than The Godfather.
It is hard to find on cd, I got mine as an import.
