I love my LD player, not that i think LD will ever make a comeback, i think it had too many negative points to it.
But i still love it. I just picked up an uncut version of LEatherface TCM 3 for under 6 bucks(didn't this dvd get cancelled or pushed back). Plus there is the whole orginal Star Wars thing. And i have alot of the DIsney Titles that are yet to be released(but i'll give it to the dvds the difference between Snow White on DVD and LD is incredible). I really doubt it would ever make a comeback but it will be awhile before i give mine up.

I would not support LD if it made a comeback. Yet i will purchase films that i like, that may never see the light of day on dvd in my prefered version.

So i'm happy with my Criterion CAV edition of Close Encounters of the Third Kind..which i got for free in mind condition

Also i plan to eventually pick up the original original SW's trilogy. Probably won't waste $$ on the Definitive Edition which goes for to much on ebay. Yet i will get either the first WS release or THX releases. So Lucas can kiss my a$$. If he does not release the original original versions on dvd. Then i won't be buying at all

Yet i will keep my LD collection relatively small. My player does not switch sides. So i have to flip them over. It may get annoying if i watched them all the time. Yet since i only watch them once in awhile. I can deal with it,with no problem at all.

The only problem is selling LDs. I would put a few i don't want anymore on ebay. Yet where to find boxes big enough to ship them?

I used the 12.5" x 15.5" x 3" Priority box for singles and doubles. As long as you ship Priority Mail, they're free.

Is there a single advantage that LD has over DVD as a format?
Yes and its a huge one... audio. uncompressed PCM, full bitrate (1411kbps) DTS and superior DD tracks.

Getting up every 30 to 45 minutes to flip a disk would drive me nuts.
CLV Laserdisc can hold up to 60 minutes a side, and with double sided players, despite a longer pause, it's not much different from a DVD having to change a layer.

Besides if they made dvds with 1509 DTS that required changing discs these days I'd gladly get my lazy ass of the couch once per film for the improvement in quality.

I love dvd... but these days it's studio decisions that seem to cripple the format more than the formats shortcomings. LD was allowed to shine because there was alot less revenue involved, and hence less tighter controls on content.

Just a quick point that the quality difference between the initial WS releases and the THX 'faces' re-release is stunning. Unless the $$$ is a huge deal, you DO NOT want the initial release... you want the THX ones.

I collected laserdiscs from 1983 thru 1997 and still have a rather large collection (about 1300) remaining. While I enjoyed the improved quality of the laserdisc over tapes, there were some problems I encountered that would cause me to not start collecting them again, ie laser rot (I had about 100 "rot" on me over the years), colors bleeding on several discs, and the price of the laserdiscs (avg $39.95, at discount about $32.00). One of the advantages of laserdiscs over dvd at this point, is the availability of some films that are still not available on dvd, ie Song of the South. Changing sides of the disc was no problem for me as I had an auto-reverse player. Of course, if the film was over two hours long, you had to change discs altogether. But, that was generally a good place to take a brief intermission. At this point, I would stay with DVD, not go back to LD.

Some people also have the common sense to use a clean stylus, and take care of their vinyl. No pops or skips here.

America, indeed.

I would love to see a few special laserdisc releases. I love the format. DVD is good, but I like the picture on many of my laserdiscs much better. Also, I have never had to constantly adjust my sound system for LD's - sometimes, the DVD dialogue tracks are just too damn low!

I agree, comparing the audio tracks of the LD to the DVD editions of Verhoeven's "Robocop" and "Starship Troopers", the former, from Image Ent. the bass is incredible, never quite matched on either Critierion LD or DVD for that matter. Again, on "Starship" the pcm laserdisc audio is dynamic and broad, I hope the rumored "superbit" August DTS DVD release can match it.

All the DTS laserdiscs have stellar audio tracks:

"Toy Story" - great superior sound to the DVD's DD track

I have for some reason (while being a staunch DTS supporter) found the Dolby Digital soundtrack on the laserdisc edition of "Saving Private Ryan" to be far more intricate and reveals more detail of this film's great soundmix than the DVD DTS track. There is a contanst rumble of bass during the battle scenes notably near the beginning and end of the film that is absent from the DVD (DTS) edition.

About 3-4 years ago I got a LD player and about 15 discs for 100 bucks, give or take. The discs included the BTTF trilogy, T2: Director's Cut and the orignal release of the Star Wars trilogy. The entire format is nice, but DVD takes it and makes it better, for the most part. I was sick of flipping the discs.

I also wound up buying the LD release of Star Wars: The Definitive Collection, for less than 100 bucks. I'll cherish that one, seeing as how we'll never see these original movies on DVD.

Damn you, Lucas, damn you to HELL!!!!
