John Carpenter DVD questions

This is my first post so forgive me if this information has been covered.

I am finding it hard to find a few of John Carpenter's flicks on DVD. What special edition discs are out there of any of his films? What's OOP and what is still available? Anything being re-released? Any help would be great. Thanks.

I believe this info is correct (but don't swear by it):

Readily Available:

The Thing
Assault on Precinct 13
Escape from LA
Escape from New York
Big Trouble in Little China (2-disc)

OOP:

Prince of Darkness
They Live

Coming Soon?:

Dark Star (new release with both cuts)
They Live (??? Re-release ???)

The ones that have been released and are now OOP are:

They Live (a special edition re-release has been rumored for years, and it's available in other regions)

Prince of Darkness

Big Trouble in Little China had a 2-disc special edition release that may be scarce since the 1 disc got issued.

I don't think there are any others that have gone OOP without a better edition replacing it.

also: Halloween has had dozens of reissues, but hold out for the one to come with the Carpenter Criterion commentary track.

Actually, Big Trouble in Little China 2-Disc is becoming rather hard to come by. You may have to eaither pay full MSRP or pick up the 1 disc (which still has the commentary and some good stuff).

I'd love to see Starman get a special edition re-release.

all I need to complete the JC collection is Elvis, if that ever comes to dvd....how sad if not. he's one of my main directors as far as my library goes, and although I have the now oop titles, I'm getting the import versions in July. do try to locate a copy of the now hard-to-find Big Trouble...., it's a great set.

Unless there's another one, this is already out.

Ahem you forgot to mention

Dracula 2000 with Gerard Butler, and James Woods. Soundtrack by John Carpenter and the Texas Toad Lickers. If you want to hear some foot stomping, kick a*s rock and roll; this movie and soundtrack has it!

Dracula 2000? Do you mean Vampires? Dracula 2000 was another film and no where near as cool as Vampires.

you should maybe add Eyes of Laura Mars, even though directed by Irvin Kershner. John did the screenplay and story. it sorta feels like a JC film.

Vampires it is, there was a movie called Drac 2000

At around 2:30 AM my eyes are telling me you got to go to sleep, that's probably when I typed it in my log book for CX-860
300 + 1 changer. :embarassed:

P.S. The Texas Toad Lickers is correct though. Turn up your bass or Subwoofers, and shake the house from it's foundation.

HALLOWEEN 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION - Fall 2003

It has been 25 years since Michael Myers first returned to Haddonfield. Now he returns to DVD for this special anniversary edition. Extras are still being determined, but expect a plethora of new goodies (i.e. audio commentary, etc.) for this exciting release. Expect more announcements in the coming months, and please note all features at this point are tentative and subject to change. Closed Captioned for the Hearing Impaired.

Got this off Yahoo News about the new 25th Ann. Halloween DVD:

Rounding out today's news is some news from Anchor Bay Entertainment. Yep, apparently 1,234 different versions wasn't enough - on August 5th, Anchor Bay will release a 25th Anniversary Edition of the John Carpenter classic Halloween. At least this time it looks like it might actually be worth buying again, with the much-beloved audio commentary that appeared on the old Criterion laserdisc, an hour-long version of the recent AMC Backstory TV special, which included never-before-seen production footage, and more to be announced. Stay tuned for the full details and retail price.

So I'm assuming that the Criterion commentary is a done deal? I'm sure AB would hate to have another "Within the Woods" fiasco on their hands.

If you have a multi-region player, the Region 2 UK edition has a great commentary track.

Apparently, sales of the initial bare-bones DVD in the U.S. were 'soft', so they are reluctant to do a SE re-release.

I found the 2 disc version of Big Trouble In Little China today for $26.99.

What is included with the 2 disc set that has been omitted from the single disc version?
