Seinfeld on DVD

For the first time ever, this isn't a speculative thread!

In this week's Video Business magazine:

VIDBITS
Seinfeld prepping Seinfeld

The Seinfeld TV series is finally being prepared for a DVD release, according to co-creator/star Jerry Seinfeld. In the May issue of VB sister publication DVD Exclusive (formerly DVD Premiers), Seinfeld says he is helping to create interviews and commentaries and dig up the annual season-ending gag reels that could be included as extras. Seinfeld will be on The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno, On the Record With Bob Costas, and Live With Regis and Kelly May 14-19 to promote the Miramax DVD of his theatrical documentary Comedian, which he produced and loaded with extras. He said the decision and timing of the Seinfeld series on DVD is in the hands of Columbia parent Sony Pictures, which owns distribution rights. Sources at Sony and CTHE said it's not a question of if it will come out, but when.
So there you go. No definite details yet, but this is the best we've heard so far.

Awesome. The 1st season was really short so hopefully the first set will be Seasons 1-2, or 1-3.

The show didn't really get "funny" till around Season 3.

JaxComet 05-12-03 05:48 PM

This could get expensive.....

Gdrlv 05-12-03 05:51 PM

Excellent news!

LBPound 05-12-03 05:52 PM

[Seinfeld thread auto-response]Damn newbies gotta run a search and use question marks...

;) ;) ;)

Thanks for the info, jough! Great news!

If the price is right, I'll buy. It's a fantastic show, one of the funniest. But it's ubiquitous on late night TV, and there are a few other shows slated for the rest of the year that aren't rerun on as much or at convenient times.

Still, good to hear that it IS coming and with supplements too.

jough 05-12-03 05:53 PM

You know, it just hit me:

Seinfeld says he is helping to create interviews and commentaries
COMMENTARIES!!!!! :D :D :D

Oh, sweet fancy Moses! Seinfeld commentaries. Perhaps for each episode?

Oh, happy happy day!

I doubt it'll be out in 2003 - if they're working on finding materials now and the studio hasn't announced anything yet, it could be a big 2004 release.

The question now is how fast they'll release this, whether it'll be seasons at a time (it probably will be) and how much in the way of extras will be available.

If the sets are anything like the recent Star Trek releases, that'd be fine by me. I'd buy every season of Seinfeld.

ARRRRRR

atari2600 05-12-03 08:45 PM

more importantly that price is how long between seasons. if its gunna be a simpsons sort of deal, i wont buy. im not waiting a year between seasons (its the main reason i havent bought simpsons season sets), because i have a collectors mentality.

but i want this tv series on dvd more than any other show (cept perfect strangers which will never released i bet). the extras sound great.

There are 9 seasons of seinfeld but the first 2 are rather short

Piazza 05-12-03 09:55 PM

palebluedot 05-12-03 09:59 PM

every other season after 2 that had the 22+ episodes.

SCHMEGGA 05-12-03 11:22 PM

Just thought this was another weekly Seinfeld gag. Great to see something of actual news regarding the series finally. I can't wait.

Sunday Morning 05-12-03 11:25 PM

I don't collect t.v. seasons box sets that much (I have all the x files, csi season 1, all the sex & city, and six feet under- that's it)

But I will be collecting all the seinfelds.

The summer of george is coming!

thecrazydude 05-13-03 01:55 AM

fantastic!

RichardW 05-13-03 06:30 AM

When I saw this thread yesterday, I didn't read it because I thought it was another one of those "When's Seinfeld coming to DVD?" threads. Then I saw the story at Davis DVD this morning.

This is very good news. Hopefully these won't be on a release schedule like The Simpsons. Commentaries will be nice, but they're not necessary on every episode.

harosa 05-13-03 07:59 AM

I read somewhere that TBS, or TNT (cant remember which) had paid some insane amount of money for Seinfeld until 2006 or whatever-(it was for a long time) so a DVD release would be out of the question since they paid so much for the rights and a DVD release would eat into their profits.

Me too. I decided to check it out when I saw there were 27 responses and it hadn't been locked yet.

I declare today a holiday in honor of this announcement.

Happy Festivus everyone.

Festivus for the rest of us!!!

bobletteross 05-13-03 08:43 AM

NEED DVD-ROM FEATURE!

Please god, no SHRINKAGE!!! Hopefully, they'll include seasons 1 and 2 together.

But what I NEED is a text based script viewer that is searchable by keyword. And a cumulate index with each seasons set.

Wouldn't you love to find where and when certain words/phrases first appeared? Am I asking too much? I'm a VERY BAD MAN!

Here's some more from DavisDVD.com....

although it's not much

RKillgore 05-13-03 09:34 AM

Will there be a coffee table version?

Of course, since there is a trickle of information of an actual release, this may cause a new rush of newbies posting a question for a definite date. Mods, you may want to make this one a sticky so it's always posted where newbies can see it.

jiggyblau 05-13-03 10:00 AM

I can't believe what I'm reading. By the way, these pretzels...they're making me thirsty.

It was TBS, about $200 million, and through 2011. I never thought a DVD release was out of the question because of that. Friends season 1 was announced shortly after it ended its first run on TBS. People will still watch the episodes on TBS if it's on DVD.

LOL Me too! Now I'm wondering what else I missed...

JoeyOhhhh 05-13-03 12:14 PM

DavisDVD saying maybe late this year.

I find that ridiculously optimistic. Extras are looking nice, and the commentaries aren't necessary for each episode (although it appears most of the cast certainly has the time).

Josh-da-man 05-13-03 01:08 PM

Oh, and...
