MST3K - the Sci Fi Years
I've noticed that the only MST3K's released on DVD/video thus far are the Comedy Central shows with Mike and Joel. Does anyone out there know if there is some kind of legal dilemma with Sci Fi Channel that prevents the release of the episodes from the "Pearl Years"? My videos are getting old and worn. Some of my favs:
Werewolf
Parts - The Clonus Horror
Riding with Death
The Touch of Satan
Space Mutiny
Diabolik
And many more. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this.

, but of those listed SCIFI only owns Touch of Satan and Space Mutiny. Once SCIFI stops showing them, it's a good guess they've lost the rights (Diabolik is a recent addition to the "Goodbye" list). Who owns the rights afterwards? Any answer I give would be a complete guess. The list of episodes they're showing gets smaller month by month.

The rights would fall back to the original owner and Best Brains would have to renegotiate to release the movie on home video.
There are a couple scifi chan episodes available from best brains on vhs because either best brains bought the movies outright or they are public domain movies or best brains got permission. Releasing episodes is not related to whether or not the scifi chan has the right since scifi chan only has the rights to air the movies on tv, best brains or rhino would have to get the home video rights if they wanted to release them.
Personally I consider MST3k a parody and covered under the Fair Use Act but I doubt a lawyer would see it that way.

they need to get more out there. The box set/prices have been awsome!
I would LOVE to get the Toho films they did in the early series, but I know it's a cold day in hell when they get those back.
Anybody have tapes of those they can trade with me?

The Rhino deal was made for the Comedy Central episodes only.
Best Brains released 4 VHS tapes of Sci-Fi episodes.
The MST3K DAP is still a great place to get unreleased episodes. The quality of the Sci-Fi era episodes is exceptional since most were done with direct captures from a Tivo box.

Just to note this from the MST3K info club.
Wonder if this will be SCi-Fi episodes or at least some new CC episodes never on home video.
RHINO PLANS "EXCITING" DVD RELEASE
The good folks at Rhino Home Video have apparently rethought their plans for MST3K this year. They now tell us they are planning an "exciting" DVD release for the fourth quarter of 2003. The plans are still in their very early stages, so we have no information on what will be on the DVD or when exactly it will be released. As we receive more info, we'll be sure to pass it along. Stay tuned!

Not sure about KTMA, but I doubt it would be the movie unless they're just producing it for Universal. I'd always thought they only got This Island Earth if they got the dist rights for the Msty version.
What I would love to see is a big three disc set: 16x9 version of the theatrical cut, the original This Island Earth, and the uncut version of the MST3K cut. The current one is shorter than a TV episode! A cast commentary with in character commentary would be incredible also.
