It's Miramax so it'll probably be Ben Affleck or Matt Damon, they put them in a bunch of movies. (Seriously, they want Affleck or Damon, as they're reluctant to use Lee after he's made several bombs: "A Guy Thing", "Stealing Harvard", "Dreamcatcher", "Big Trouble" etc.)

Sadly... GuruAskew is right. Miramix is thinking Afleck, worst idea ever. No offense to him, he's a good actor, Chasing Amy is one of my Top 5 movies, and I'm obsessed with everything that Kevin Smith does... but Lee is just to perfect to think anyone else.

Ben Affleck as Fletch? I can't think of a worse idea....i'm still trying to get over the idea of Ben Affleck as a superhero. It would be better to see Jason Lee as Fletch,as long as he doesn't overact...like he has a tendency to do.

Well, therein lies the conflict. Smith refuses to do it without Lee, Miramax is understandably hesitant about hiring Lee considering his huge string of box-office flops. Jason Lee is one of my favorite actors but his track record is spotty at best when it comes to box-office performance.

Just thought I'd add this, I was tooling around on the vast Viewaskew website, and I found a FAQ regarding this, with at least Smith's side of the story, straight from the overcoat's mouth.

FLETCH 3
Kevin : "FLETCH 3 was something that came about before CHASING AMY came out. My agent sent out the script to CHASING AMY and, suddenly, people were interested in me again for a few minutes. And I had some meetings where people were like “We really like the writing, we’d like you to start writing for us.” That’s when I started the rewriting career and SUPERMAN came out of that. When I met with Universal and Stacey Snyder, they said, “Would you like to do something here?” I was like, “No, because you guys really didn’t do well with the movie we did here. And I just don’t want to go through an experience like that again, but you guys do have a property I think you still have it which I was always very interested in which is FLETCH.” They were like, “Really, you want to do a FLETCH movie?” And I said, “Well, I’d at least like to write it. I don’t know if I want to direct it, but I would like to give it a shot writing,” because I was a huge fan of the Gregory McDonald novels. And they said “Well who do you see as FLETCH?” And I said, “Well, I mean, Chevy Chase is Fletch. He’s still alive.” And they said “Yeah, but he’s old. We’re not really in the Chevy Chase business anymore.” I said, “Well, I think it’s the only way you can go, I mean, he’s still around and he was really funny in the first two.” So, they sent me over to Brian Grazer at Imagine and he was all “Yeah, I’m up for it, let’s do it.” And I signed a deal and was supposed to start writing and then I got knee deep into DOGMA and it just kept getting put off and put off. And I remember my agent called me while I was on the set of DOGMA and he was just like, “Well, Universal wants to know if you are ever going to get around to FLETCH.” And I said, “Well, I’m filming the flick right now and I’ll be editing it for the next 6 months, I won’t get to it for at least a year.” And then he said “Well, why don’t you just pass. Why don’t you just let it go. And that way they’re not waiting on you and you’re not carrying the reputation as the guy who can’t meet a deadline.” And I let it go, it went by the wayside and then I read that Chevy Chase was really pissed off at me and said that I was real Hollywood and that was a real Hollywood move. And I was just like “Buddy, you can accuse of me being a lot of things, but Hollywood just never seems right.” It doesn’t fit, but I don’t know, he seemed pretty pissed off about the whole thing. And it really irked me because I was like “They didn’t even want you in the movie, dude. I had to fight for you and granted I didn’t make the movie, at least I was on your side. That I didn’t get around to doing it, hey I’m sorry, but don’t snipe at me because of it.” So, that won’t happen either."

As Jimmy Lee Farnsworth would say, "Hallelujah!"
It's fantastic news that Fletch Lives finally coming to DVD - it's taken long enough.
Jason Lee seems a reasonable choice to follow Chevy in Fletch Won, but failing that I'd propose Ryan Reynolds, star of Van Wilder.
BTW, to answer a previous question, Fletch's middle initial is indeed "M," with the man himself claiming it stands for "Mahatma."
Anyway, I must go. I parked in a disabled space. Actually, I parked on a disabled person....

Some Fletch Answers...
Hey Fletch Fans....
Here's some answers to some of your questions.....
Incase you guys are unaware....I run the most complete Fletch website on the net.... http://www.fletchwon.net
Fletch & Fletch Live DVD:
I started a Petition a year or two ago on my site for Universal to put out a Fletch:SE and Fletch Lives DVD. Tons of signatures poured in and I kept hounding Universal emailing everyone I could about the petition. Finally in December, Universal emailed me and let me know that they are aware of my petition and will forward it to the right people. Now, 6 months later comes the announcement of a Fletch Lives DVD (due out in Sept). Maybe we actually did make a difference. We gotta keep it up for a loaded Fletch DVD...maybe even for the 20th anniversary in 2005. So if you haven't signed it, head over to my site and contribute.
Who Miramax wants to play Fletch:
Kevin is still planning on Fletch Won to be his next project. It's at a standstill right now because Harvey Weinstein wants Ben Affleck or Matt Damon to do it and Kevin won't do it unless Jason Lee plays the young Fletch. Kevin is hoping that if Jersey Girl is successful (and it should be, for several reasons) he will have the pull to make the movie with Lee.
Lee as Chevy's son:
Kevin was gonna do a version of Fletch, at Universal many years ago ('97) called 'Son of Fletch' through 'Imagine Entertainment' and he just wound up working on Dogma, so it kinda fell apart.
But I'd love for Fletch fans to head over to my site www.fletchwon.net for all the latest news on Chevy, Fletch, Fletch Won and more...sign the Petitions, post on the MoooonRiver Message Board, and check out the hundreds of other cool stuff I've got over there. I'd love to hear what you all think....
Thanks for reading...

Thanks for all the interesting Fletch info. I got addicted to the Fletch novels in high school, and I loved the first movie. However, I really disliked the second one. It just didn't click, and I really didn't find it as funny as the first film.
And I have to say, I don't think Kevin Smith is right for the job (not a big Kevin Smith fan).
