Charade question
Okay. I´ve officially given up on trying to get the Criterion Collection version of Charade. When I finally got around to seeing the movie (and loved it), it was already out of print, and I´m just not willing to pay 45+ dollars for any movie based on the single virtue of it being out of print. So, I´m wondering if anyone knows what other edition of the movie is the best one to buy (based on transfer, price and possibly supplements)? Unless someone knows where I can obtain the CC version at a reasonable price
Thanks.

Thanks.

Probably the best transfer right now is on the version that comes as a bonus on the "Truth About Charlie" DVD. Downside, of course, is that you have to buy "The Truth About Charlie."
I found a Criterion copy of "Charade" just a couple of months ago at a Best Buy. You might look around a little bit more, there and at Borders book stores.

Criterion's are still around at retail (~$30) if you're willing to look and wait a little. It has an excellent commentary that I feel is worth the price. However, the Truth About Charlie is supposed to have a decent anamorphic trasfer which would beat any of the $5 public domain discs.
If you're really in Iceland though, that would probably make it tougher to find one.

Thrice:
You can check stock at Borders stores within a 200 mile radius at http://www.bordersstores.com.
(Be warned: Last time I saw it at the Eugene store, it was priced at $35.99.)

Yeah, it seems like those Borders are just about on every block in Iceland.
I wonder if they ship internationally?
Is Charade really that hard to find now?

If you don't want to spend a lot of cash, then definitely go with The Truth About Charlie. The transfer of Charade on that disk is really comparable to the Criterion version, plus it has the added bonus of being anamorphic, which the Criterion version is not. It doesn't come with any supplements though. That is unless you count The Truth about Charlie as a supplement.

The Criterion is getting real tough to find--I got mine at a Best Buy a few months ago, and haven't seen one since, but if you're into searching, it's worth finding--the commentary is great.
If not, go with the Truth about Charlie disc.

As others have said, check your local stores, especially Borders. Don't trust the online store inventory system, unfortunately in my experience it's almost always wrong when looking for hard-to-find titles.

Actually, it appears that Deep Discount DVD still has the Criterion Charade. At least, if I add it to my cart, it doesn't say anything about it not being in stock like other out-of-stock titles. YMMV. I've got one, I'm not ordering another nor stockpiling...

Criterion's transfer is better than Universal's, even thought it's non-anamorphic.
Universal's transfer uses about 1/2 the bitrate and has less color saturation. It also is devoid of extras.

what's that about?
I'd also like to know if this reviewer used a 16:9 set when determining that the Criterion is better than the anamorphic version.
