I love Anchor Bay's product, but they do milk every dime (new penny over there?) from every release, don't they?

Well, apparently they weren't aware of the better elements being available at the time of the original DVD's release. I welcome this new release with open arms.

BTW, the US release can probably be had for 15 dollars.

I'm surprised MANN decided to finally do a commentary he was so anti dvd for the longest time..It's nice to see old farts like him finally coming around and embracing the format..

I will pick this one up for sure

Let's hope he revists HEAT and THE INSIDER for SE's

Is that the actual theatrical cut? What AB initially released as the TC was not really that. It several small but noticable to fans, differences.

It might just be a glitch, or some unintentional misinformation, but the run time on the upcoming release is listed at Amazon.com as 121 minutes, the same as the current edition, and 3 minutes less than the previous (now OOP) special edition.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Actually, this new release is supposed to contain a brand new "director's cut" different from all previous versions. I don't know the exact differences but I believe something from the previous "director's cut" has been removed (Graham's visit to a psychiatrist?).

Maybe Mann will make Graham shoot Dolarhyde first, just to be a little different

The newly restored "Director's Cut" has been released in Europe w/ commentary. According to the review I read, while the film is fully restored and looks great, the actual cut of the film is identical or nearly identical to Disc 2 of Anchor Bay's 2-disc LE. So it's NOT a new cut, just a new transfer w/ commentary.

If that's true, it's a shame. The longer TV version of the movie cut out a number of small pieces of footage from the theatrical version, and condensed some parts (like the opening credits) in order to fit the TV time slot.

Ideally I'd like to see a new cut of the film that retains the best qualities of both previous versions.

i was at the Pittsburgh Comicon this past weekend and the Anchor Bay representative talked about the new DVD of Manhunter. if i remember correctly, he said that when Red Dragon was coming out, they got a call from Michael Mann who said he would like to do an audio commentary for the Manhunter DVD and they said its a little late since we already released it and you werent interested, then Michael Mann said he has a better quality uncut version they can use and thats how the new DVD got rolling. Not exact quotes but the best i could remember it.

Heat is owned by Warner Bros, so I doubt Anchor Bay would have anything to say about it.
