I thought I read somewhere that the Criterion edition of Brazil was out of print. I just saw it a BB yesterday so if it is I am going to go pick it up. THanks for the info... By the way anyone with this movie, what do you think of it???

If the Web site says it's out of print, it's out of print. If the Web site doesn't say it's out of print, it's (drum roll please)... not out of print.

It just seems like it's OOP b/c people are paying exorbitant prices for this set on Ebay. It seems to regularly go for around $50 there even though you can get it at DDD for just over $40. But then, people are stupid.

Have you not seen it yet? If not you might want to rent it first before shelling out 50+ for it. I rented it due to all of the high praise and was left underwhelmed.

My 2 cents: Although I'm not sure if It will be another 3 disc set, Criterion is rumored to include Brazil in it's series of do-overs(aka Seven S.) within the next year or so ....

Really? Where did you hear/read about this? The only thing I can see them adding would be a new anamorphic transfer.

Word is that Criterion is looking at a number of do-overs just for the lack of anamorphic or not up to par transfers. We'll see.

I've read that rumor here too... and as some one who a couple of the movies that have been mentioned (Seven Samurai, Brazil)...

I view a double dip on $30+ dollar dvds in a pretty negative light. As I have heard many people here say, one reason they buy Criterion (besides the quality of the films, or the fact they are exclusive to the Collection) is the expectancy of customer service.

Any chance the people who have started these rumors have mentioned them thinking about letting owners mail in their old disks for the new transfers? (Esp in the case of only anamorphic upgrades).

Brazil maybe, but I don't think Seven Samurai is a double dip at all. I have also heard they are looking at re-doing Armageddon as well. However, I have seen rumors posted over on the Criterion forum that Armageddon may go OOP sooner or later. That being said SS is the only official release I mentioned planned.

I agree with you on the topic of trade ups. I wish every company would give you some kind of credit for re-buying the same titles.

Also keep this in mind, Criterion wants to make money. SS and Armageddon are two of their biggest sellers. I'm sure they want to take advantage of that.

By that indication, wouldn't it seem that almost everything is going out of print? Most DVDs I look for, people are paying way over online prices, plus a big shipping fee on top of that. Ah, that explains it.

I second this...I actually bought it and then sold it due to my dislike of the movie, I dont know what it is, but I had no interest in it, tried to like it but no good. I think the movie wouldnt have received half the praise as it has if it wasnt for the highly documented row over the editing between Gilliam and the studio.

I for one, was whelmed when I first saw it on the big screen-- OVER whelmed when I got the Criterion set, with the extras, the "Love conquers All" version, the interviews, the documentary....

In My Humble Opinion, of course.

I'm not gonna knock anyone's opinion (we are all entitled to one - no matter how wrong), but I consider Gilliam's BRAZIL to be one of the finest films ever committed to celluloid. There are just some folks that seem immune to the story's "universal" themes (pun intended), or are just too upset by what they perceive as a "downbeat" ending.

In regards to the prospect of Criterion "remastering" BRAZIL, I'd say I'm ALL FOR IT! Bear in mind that BRAZIL was one of Criterion's earliest entries to the dvd market, and even the mighty Criterion made a few mistakes early on. Let's also not forget that dvd technology has grown by leaps and bounds since BRAZIL was released to dvd; AND the transfer was merely a port from the already legendary laserdisc. Any of you who know anything about dvd authoring know that direct laserdisc ports to dvd are among the WEAKEST of all dvds. I, for one, would LOVE to see BRAZIL upgraded (I've always thought that the Criterion transfer was a bit soft anyway) - but that's just me!

Yes it was the film itself. The topic is cool, I've read 1984 several times and it was part of the reason I was really hyped to buy this film. Also I like things that poke fun at mindless beauracrecy. Hell I almost bought the CC set many a time with out seeing it. Luckly I got wise and rented it first. Needless to say I was let down big time. I'm not going to debate parts of the movie because it has been over a year since i've seen it. I'll say this I liked parts of it, liked the dark ending, but over all the movie just bored me.

Same with the other "great" SF Movie of the 80's Blade Runner, I get what the heck it about, and questions it rasies. But it still doesn't change the fact that the movie is boring as hell.

MrBob, out of curiosity... what would you consider a good SF movie? I am asking since it is difficult for me to place Blade Runner and Brazil into the same category. Incidentally, I went to see Brazil in the theater with two other people. Neither one of them liked it, I thought (and still think) it is one of the best films ever made. Somehow it just resonated with me and started me on a Gilliam kick.

MSRP is $59.95. Don't worry, a lot of things on eBay are going for almost full MSRP lately. Hard to find deals on anything that more than 3 people want.

Very True. Some single titles are going for above msrp used. Take the 40 Star Trek original series dvds. Most full sets are going on Ebay for 600-650 used. Or you can buy them from DDD.com brand new for under 600!

Bigger collections (500+) are not selling for much at all. I guess not to many people gettng into dvd right now.

Hell, if EVERYBODY liked the same movie, we'd all still be standing in line to get into the theater!

DVD Planet has it on sale now for $38.97. I had a five dollar online coupon and picked it up for under $36.50 total...not bad for a $60 MSRP!

I have to agree... Brazil IS quite possibly the best movie ever made... and so much of the pokes at "todays" society , whether then or now... still ring soooo true...

And you guys got me so excited... bastards... i thought my copy was suddenly going to sky rocket in value when I read the title to this thread.

This is one of those movies I've been meaning to get. Kept putting it off... and putting it off. Last Sunday I was at the DVDPlanet store and decided to pick it up, along with a couple other Criterions. Now I have one I can call my own
